Q:visitors insurance for visiting 74 year old parent Hello - I am looking to buy Comprehensive medical insurance coverage for my father due to arrive in the US in a few days. He is 74 and healthy without any significant chronic conditions, but I see that there really is no choice available - Patriot platinum America is the only option. Is this because of his age? I also see that it is from Sirius International. That name rings a bell because I was reading your and some other websites of people giving feedback on their experiences with visitors' insurance. I recall reading that this company is an international company, so they are not accountable to the medical coverage laws of the US, and therefore they can get away without paying in case of a claim (like several India-based companies do). Please advise me how true this is, and what your experience with this company has been. Do you actually involve yourself in assisting clients if they have difficulty with getting their claims covered? If so, how "fair" and reliable do you think Sirius International is? Hope to make a decision very soon, so request a prompt reply. Thanks,

A:
Thank you for your interest in purchasing visitors insurance for your parents. The choices available depend upon the age group and the policy maximum you choose. For 70+, for $100,000 in comprehensive coverage, Patriot Platinum America is the best choice. What you have understood is not completely true. The underwriter Sirius International is not involved at all in day to day handling of the claims. All of that is handled by the administrator IMG, that is located in Indianapolis, IN. We have been selling their insurance plans since 2002 and we currently sell thousands of policies for them every month and I don't see any problem as you describe. All legitimate claims are paid. IMG is regulated by department of insurance of Indiana, USA and also participates in Better Business Bureau. Of course, if at all fails, you can always file a lawsuit against them in the U.S. itself. None of those remedies are available to you if you buy the insurance from an Indian company. If you want to buy the insurance from a truly domestic company such as Blue Cross, Aetna etc., such companies do not provide insurance to visitors. You can read more about it at /visitors-medical-insurance/ Most people do not have any problems with the claims. However, if you have any difficulty, you can always contact us. We will be glad to help you as we work for you and not for any particular insurance company. I hope that answers your questions. If you have any other questions, please feel free to contact us at any time.

Q:visitor's insurance My mother is visiting for 2 months and 8 days starting in a week. She has arthritis, but otherwise is healthy. no bp, diabetes or any other known ailment. What insurance would you suggest?

A:
Thank you for your interest in purchasing visitors insurance for your mother. You can consider purchasing Atlas America Insurance. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us at any time. Is arthritis considered a preexisting condition? Yes. But exactly what does that mean. my mother is 73. She is in good health. For arthritis she takes pain medicine and some osteobiflex etc. So the insurance is for any unseen health issue, emergency treatment, accident etc. so how is arthritis a preexisting for any emergency treatment? would appreciate your patience. thanks, Any medical conditions that exist before the effective date of the policy are considered pre-existing conditions. Therefore, any expenses related to arthiritis will NOT be covered. However, if she gets into any new medical conditions, injuries or accidents that occur after the effective date of the policy, that is what the insurance would be useful for.

Q:Maternity Insurance Wait Period I am currently in US in dependent Visa. I do not have any insurance yet since I will be traveling back to home country in 2 months for 6 months. If we plan to conceive when I am here (in a month) and deliver the baby in US, what isurance policy would be good? My husband is in H1B and I am in H4. I heard maternity and baby coverage case is treated different in Insurance policy. Do I need to get insured before a long period that we conceive? What is the wait time? Can I get insured at least before getting pregnantMy husband has ongoing insurance coverage from past 5 years. I am looking for some full coverage. Please suggest.

A:
There is no such individiual insurance. Inquire at your husband's work place if they can enroll in their group health insurance that would meet your requirements. If I decide to wait for some time: 1.What is the minimal duration of wait period? 2. Can I get an insurance separately, if my husband's company does not have any facility to include dependants? Thank you. There is no such insurance.

Q:Tax deduction for parents health insurance Hello, This year my parents are visiting me for 6 months and I have purchased health insurance for them. Are the premium paid for my parent's insurance tax deductible. I am a permanent resident and my parents are on visitor visa.

A:
We are not tax professionals and therefore, can not give any tax related advice. Please check with your accountant for complete details. However, as far as I understand, the health insurance premiums are deductible only to the extent they are above 7.5% of your gross annual income.
