Q:I am looking for a policy for a F-1 Student, that will meet Florida Atlantic University's requirements as follows. Florida Atlantic University Regulation 4.009 Health Insurance for International Students and International Scholars (1) The University sponsors International Students and International Scholars in the F and J non-immigrant visa categories with permission from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and the U.S. Department of State. International Students and International Scholars sponsored by the University must comply with health insurance requirements of the Florida Board of Governors (BOG) (F/J students), the U.S. Department of State (all J visa holders), and the University Board of Trustees in order to maintain eligibility for the non-immigrant visa programs in which they participate. Authority to establish procedures for verifying compliance is delegated to the Office of Student Health Services and the Office of International Student and Scholar Services. Willful failure to maintain the required insurance coverage will result in termination of participation in the Exchange Visitor Program. (2) Definitions: Exchange Visitor: A citizen of a foreign country who is sponsored or hosted by the University under the J-1 Exchange Visitor Program as a degree/non-degree student, student intern, professor, researcher, short-term scholar, specialist, or other category of exchange visitor status as defined by the Exchange Visitor Program. Exchange Visitor Program: A program administered by the U.S. Department of State that provides qualified foreign nationals with opportunities to participate in educational and cultural exchange programs under a J-1 Exchange Visitor visa. The University is designated by the U.S. Department of State to sponsor Exchange Visitors in the following J-1 visa categories: Professor, Research Scholar, Short-Term Scholar, Specialist, Student Intern or Student. International Student: A student sponsored or hosted by the University who is not a U.S. citizen or permanent resident of the U.S. and who holds a temporary U.S. non-immigrant visa (e.g., F visa or J-1 Student designation). International Scholar: A J-1 Exchange Visitor who is sponsored or hosted by the University under the J-1 Exchange Visitor Program in a category of the Exchange Visitor Program other than Student. (3) No International Student in F or J non-immigrant status shall be permitted to register, or to continue enrollment, at the University without demonstrating that the student has adequate medical insurance coverage for illness or accidental injury. Adequate medical insurance coverage must meet or exceed the requirements of BOG Regulation 6.009, as well as include the following: (a) the policy must have a maximum $400 cumulative deductible per policy year; and (b) the policy must have a minimum coverage of $200,000 for covered injuries/illnesses per accident or illness per policy year with no internal caps or limitations for covered injuries or illnesses. (4) All International Scholars and all accompanying dependents on J-2 visas are required to have health insurance coverage during their period of stay on the University's J-1 program. The health insurance must meet or exceed the minimum requirements set forth in 22 C.F.R. 62.14.
