Q:Hi, I'm currently in the US under a J1 visa, and I am a MIT affiliate. I would like to change my health insurance, looking at something cheaper. I am currently under a BlueCross BlueShield, in the MIT affiliate plan. I was looking at your Atlas Essential, but I would like from you suggestion to be sure that what I pick is going to meet the requirements: http://web.mit.edu/scholars/intlscholars/healthinsurance/j1requirements.html Also, before signing, since my International Scholar Office does not certify third party insurances, other than what the MIT provide me. It is very important for me, as I could lose my visa status without the right coverage. So I would need a declaration from your side that the plan I'm going to subscribe will meet the MIT and Massachusetts requirements.

A:
The plans in the J1 section of our website including Atlas Essential will meet the State Department of Insurance requirements. Once you have completed the purchase you will be given a visa letter that will show the required coverage.

Q:Hello, I am going to go to Johns Hopkins Medicine in the USA as a j-1 postdoc fellow for a two-year period. I want to have my own health Insurance. first, need to be sure whether your offer meets the requirements or not. And at the beginning, I'd like to enroll for 6 months insurance. Do you know that is acceptable for j-1 rules? Some friends did like this but at different universities not Hopkins. I found Atlas Essential America on your website that is okay for me. Are the rules below met by this insurance? Any policy, plan or contract secured to fill the above requirements must, at a minimum be; - Underwritten by an insurance corporation having an A.M. Best rating of "A--" or above; a McGraw Hill Financial/Standard & Poor's Claims-paying Ability rating of :A-" or above; a Weiss Research, Inc. rating of "B+" or above, a Fitch Ratings, Inc. rating of "A-" or above, a Moody's Investor Services rating of "A3" or above, or such other ratings as the Department of State may from time to time specify; OR - Backed by the full faith and credit of the government of the exchange visitor's home country; OR - Part of a health benefits program offered on a group basis to employees or enrolled students by a designated sponsor; OR - Offered through or underwritten by a federally qualified Health Maintenance Organization (HMO), or eligible Competitive Medical Plan (CMP) as determined by the Health Care Financing Administration of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. - Cover the Exchange Visitor and Dependent family members for the duration of the Exchange Visitor Program as recorded in the "Program Begin Date" and "Program End Date" on Form DS-2019.

A:
Provided that you are not subject to having a plan that is ACA compliant, the Atlas Essential America plan will meet your requirements. The plan will also have an A.M. Best rating of A "Excellent" so it will fulfill this requirement as well.

Q:I have one more general question concerning visitors insurance. If the insured person needs health care in the US for a period of time that exceeds the expiration date of the policy, is this person still covered?

A:
If the insured person is still needing coverage and they have a plan that is renewable they need to renew their plan, if not purchase a new policy. Coverage would not be extended beyond the requested expiration date. If you need any additional clarification please contact our office.

Q:Hi, I am a Canadian Citizen and I am soon moving to the US for an employment opportunity. My employer will provide me a health care plan but I need a temporary health insurance to bridge the gap between the day I arrive in the US and the day I start my job 1-2 weeks and get my employer's health care plan. What type of insurance is suitable for that purpose? I first thought that I could take a visitor medical insurance but your website tells me that I cannot take such an insurance if I am resident of the US which I am not at the moment but I will be resident of the US for the duration of the insurance that I want to purchase as I will be moving to the US. Many thanks for your help

A:
If you are awaiting employer insurance you can purchase a plan called Atlas America. This plan will cover any new accidents and new illnesses that happen after the effective date of the policy. This plan will have to be purchased when you arrive into the United States. It cannot be purchased if you are locate in Canada at the time of application.

Q:I'm a international student and 49 years old. I want to have medical insurance. I came here with my son. He is 16 years old and American citizen. Can I insure with my son? If I can, how much is it? Could you send the information by email or text? My English skill is not good

A:
You can't do one application for you and your son because of different citizenship. Is there any insurance requirements from your school that needs to meet? If no, then you can purchase any of the plan from our F1/F2 International Student Insurance section. For your son, we recommend Short Term Insurance.
