Q:I would like to purchase a health insurance plan for my stay in the US that meets the following criteria for the J1 visa: As of May 15, 2015, the J-1 regulations require the following with respect to health insurance coverage: 1. Medical benefits of at least $100,000 per accident or illness 2. Payment for repatriation ((preparation and transportation of remains to home country) in case of death in the amount of $25,000 3. Payment for medical evacuation (transportation to home country on advice of attending physician) in the amount of $50,000 4. A deductible not to exceed $500 per accident or illness 5. Coverage of pre-existing conditions after a reasonable waiting period 6. Payment by the insurance company of at least 75% of the costs of medical care (the patient must not be required to pay more than 25% of medical care costs) To comply with these regulations, health insurance policies must be underwritten by corporations having one of the following: 1. A.M. Best rating of A- or above 2. McGraw Hill Financial/Standard & Poor's Claims- paying Ability rating of A- or above 3. Weiss Research, Inc. rating of "B+" or above 4. Fitch Ratings, Inc. rating of "A-" or above 5. Moody's Investor Services rating of "A3" or above. Could you offer me a health insurance plan that covers those criteria?

A:
The plan we would recommend is the ExchangeGuard. You would choose either the Choice (6 months) or Essential (12 months) to determine the waiting period for the pre-existing benefit.

Q:I'm a US citizen and currently don't have health insurance with my job. I was looking at getting some information about health insurance.

A:
The plans we offer are temporary plans until you are eligible for a long term domestic. Short term plans are not ACA compliant and will not meet the requirements so if there is any tax penalty it's like you do not have insurance. You can see the short term domestic plan here: Short Term Health Insurance Short term plans will not cover preventative care, pre-existing conditions, or routine maintenance. If you have additional questions please feel free to contact our office.

Q:I need to buy health insurance for my wife as my F2 dependent. However, I only want to buy Insubuy's health insurance for her as I am currently covered by my University Health program. My question is if I can proceed to buy one of your insurance options for her as F2 without buying insurance for me? I see some insurance options mention something related to this. Which ones are recommended to buy in these conditions?

A:
The plan we would recommend for the F2 alone is the ExchangeGuard plan as long as there is no requirements that need to be met. Keep in mind the plan is not ACA compliant and will not provide coverage for maternity or preventative care.

Q:I am a student in Chicago and I am planning a trip to Italy. My passport is Indian, so I need to apply for a Schengen visa at the Italian consulate here in Chicago. One of the requirements for the visa is travel insurance. I wanted to purchase a plan that covers the minimum requirements needed for this. I wasn't sure if the plan I saw (Patriot International) covers everything required. Here is the information listed on the Italian consulate's website: "Verification of Medical Coverage Abroad for the entire period of travel in the Schengen area with a minimum coverage of $50,000 for hospitalization, emergencies, evacuation and repatriation. Make sure that these 4 benefits are itemized on the policy issued by your current US Health Insurance company (insurance card alone is not sufficient), or by a US Travel Insurance company. If your US insurance provider cannot issue a letter specifying the above, we suggest you contact a travel insurance company which will be able to do so." ---- Please confirm that this package covers the 4 items that need to be covered.

A:
Yes, the Patriot International does meet the Schengen visa requirements. You can review the different sample visa letters in the details section before purchase. If you have additional questions please feel free to contact our office.

Q:I'm looking for health insurance for me and my husband. I just started the OPT, I already have insurance that will expire next week. I have the F1 visa and he has the F2. They said that to qualify, the medical insurance plan must be a medical/health insurance plan purchased in the U.S. with a U.S.-owned insurance company that is headquartered and operating in the U.S.. It must not be foreign insurance with U.S. affiliates/representatives, travel insurance, or reimbursement programs of any kind (these are not acceptable). This includes reimbursement arrangements of vouchers from home governments or their U.S. based consulates. Can you confirm if Insubuy meets the requirements? I also need to submit a list of the health insurance company's preferred provider network of local hospitals. Is it possible that you can send me that? I want to send them this information in advance so UCLA Extension confirms if everything is ok before I purchase the new insurance. I also want to know if I can renew the plan after a while, for example, if I buy the insurance for 3 months, can I renew it if the company I'm working for doesn't offer health insurance as one of the benefits?

A:
Who has given you these requirements? If you have graduated then the university shouldn't have any requirements that need to be met since you are no longer eligible for the plan they offer. The plans we offer are administered within the US but based on what it says below that is not enough. For example, many of the plans we offer are through Lloyd's of London and obviously they are not in the US but then, the plan is administered by a company in the US called Tokio Marine HCC. You would need to contact the university to confirm that these are requirements that need to be met now that you have graduated and if so then can you continue with your current plan to be able to meet them.
