Q:I am a research scholar visiting USA for 6 months on J1 Visa. I plan to buy the Atlas America policy (in the version with deductible 250$, policy max 500 000$). In this policy there is a coverage of acute onset of pre-existing condition. My question is: I suffer from Hemophilia A, does this qualify as a pre-existing condition and the policy will work in case of some problems connected to Hemophilia? As well, I would like to ask if this policy meets all of the U.S. State Department Insurance Policy Requirements for J1 visa holders, e.g. they require $100,000 per accident & illness coverage

A:
All of the plans in our J1 section will meet the standard J1 requirements, including Atlas America. If your sponsor has any additional requirements, we can always review those for you as well. Any known or unknown condition at the time of application is pre-existing. So anything known about or anything unknown that is already manifesting in the body. Therefore the Hemophilia A would be deemed pre-existing. Acute onset benefits cover sudden and unexpected situations. However, someone who has Hemophilia would be expected to have issues under certain conditions. More than likely, any issues due to the Hemophilia would not be covered. Some of the other plans in that section, for example the Study USA or Student Health Advantage plans will offer benefits for pre-existing conditions after a waiting period. Some plans have a 6 month waiting period and some 12 months. If your sponsor is offering you domestic insurance, that is what we would recommend as domestic plans cover pre-existing conditions. If you have any additional questions, please let us know.

Q:For dental it is a grey area, when someone has pain is naturally from decay ,nerve, abscessed teeth, etc, otherwise what type of pain are we talking about? I have never seen sound tooth have pain. I understand if existing filling or crown is not covered but once you have sudden pain, it is pain if no filling or crown was involved to me is covered when policy mentions Acute pain. Tooth pain could be due to nerve, decay, etc.

A:
The plan is not going to pay any benefit for something that is already wrong with the tooth. Acute unexpected pain- if someone has a bad tooth, it is expected they will have pain/ problems with the tooth, and therefore not unexpected. If something were to come up, for example tooth pain, and you are going to have to have it treated, I would advise to submit the claim for the reimbursement. They will review the claim and if it meets the plans benefit criteria, they will reimburse up to the benefit level offered under the plan. If not, there would not be any reimbursement, but you would still have had to have the treatment either way. These plans are not designed to cover dental issues, so they offer the 2 benefits of the acute unexpected pain and the dental accident benefits. If you think someone would require dental work while here in the U.S., you could look into the discount plan we offer called Careington. It can provide dental benefits at a discounted rate. I have attached that plan's link below for you to review. It is $11.95 month, with a 1 time non-refundable set up fee. It can cover all members of a household as well. Careington Discount Plan

Q: I have a green card and am visiting USA for 3 months. I need comprehensive coverage with vision plan that covers eye glasses as well.

A:
We would be glad to advise. Plans for Visitors on Green Cards can be found through the following quote link: Visiting USA on Green Card Plans However, none of the plans for visitors will cover vision related services or eye glasses. We do have a discount plan called Careington, that includes some discounts on vision appointments and glasses. I have also attached that plan information below as well for you to review. If you decide to purchase the discount plan, it would be separate from any travel medical insurance plan you decide to enroll into. Q:In reading the Atlas America plan details, I had some questions: 1. Geographic Restrictions state: US states - physical presence at time of application. Unavailable: Maryland, New York, Washington - can you explain what this means? 2. Atlas Series - Outstanding Restrictions: Includes individual travel, multi trip, and group insurance in Atlas series of products. Please explain what this means.

A:
We would be glad to advise. The physical presence restrictions on the Atlas America plan apply to the U.S. states of New York, Maryland, and Washington. The restriction means that if the proposed insured is in any of those states when trying to purchase the insurance, they cannot purchase it, and would have to choose a different plan. If they are not physically in one of those states at the time of purchase, then purchasing is fine. So for example, I have a visitor coming to visit me from Spain and I live in New York. If they have not yet arrived in New York, I can buy this plan and once they do arrive, they will have coverage in New York as well as all other 50 states. If they have already arrived in New York, I cannot purchase this plan for them. As far as your question about the Atlas Travel Series- it means all plans under the Atlas group have the same above restrictions. So for example, Atlas America, Atlas Essential, Atlas Premium America., etc. If you have any additional questions, please let us know.

Q: I saw the J1 visa medical insurance for Atlas America, but I do not know whether it meets the ACA requirements the University asks for.

A:
We do not offer ACA compliant plans, and therefore will not have any plans available that will meet your requirements. The only place we are aware of that a J1 visa holder can obtain that kind of coverage would be though the University itself.
