Q:Is there a temporary insurance plan available for a foreign visitor that would cover chronic medication and pre-existing conditions?

A:
There are no plan options that will include coverage for chronic medication related to a pre-existing condition. Visitors Insurance is primarily designed to provide coverage for new illnesses, injuries or accidents that either exist in the body or occur after the effective date. There is, however, a plan called the Visitors Protect. This plan does provide some pre-existing condition coverage. It will not cover expected, routine, or general maintenance, but it can provide coverage for unexpected issues arising from a pre-existing condition. In order to purchase this plan someone must not be traveling for the purpose of obtaining medical treatment, and they must purchase this plan while still in their home country. It is advised to review the policy before purchasing. you may do so using the link below. /visitors-protect-insurance/ If you have any additional questions please let us know.

Q:My FIL is 74 and will be visiting the US in July 2023. 2 years ago he injured his back multiple times but he has recovered now. During travel or when he is in the US if he injures his back again and needs treatment then will it be covered under acute onset of a pre-existing condition? Please note that he had surgery for the injury (fracture) and has recovered. He is taking calcium supplements and no other prescription medicine.

A:
Coverage is always based off of the attending physicians notes at the time of services. If the new injury is deemed completely independent of the previous injury, then plans would offer coverage. If it is deemed a pre-existing condition but meets the acute onset definition, then it would be covered under plans that offer that coverage.
