Q:My family and I live in France (I'm a US citizen and so is my son, and my partner is French). We will be travelling to the US over Christmas and would like to purchase insurance with your company, but I had a few questions. If I'm correct in looking at your website, we can choose a deductible and a maximum coverage limit, is that correct? So for example, if I chose the $0 deductible and my son got the flu and needed to see a Dr., we wouldn't have anything to pay? Or would we need to pay the dr's fee and get reimbursed? Can you also explain how pre-existing conditions work and what would qualify as a pre-existing condition?

A:
There are several things to be aware of in general, and in your specific situation, when visiting the U.S. First, you will have to purchase 2 separate policies. 1 policy for you and your son, as U.S. citizens, and then a policy for your partner who is a French citizen. As far as policy maximums and deductibles, each plan will have different options to choose from. If you choose a $0 deductible, then there is not an amount you have to pay out of pocket first before the plan will start to pay for eligible expenses. Some plans have PPO networks and some do not. If they do, then you would have negotiated rates for covered expenses. While most in network providers will direct bill, and all hospitals will direct bill for covered expenses, a provider's office, like a doctor's office which is a private practice, can have you pay at the time of service and then you would file the claim yourself. This is up to the discretion of the individual provider's office. As far as what all visitor plans cover, they cover all new illnesses and injuries, that occur or manifest after the effective date. They do not cover anything preventative, routine, or pre-existing. Some plans will have an acute onset of pre-existing conditions benefit. This benefit is available on some plans, and offers a possible benefit for certain situations due to a pre-existing condition based on the doctors report, and if the onset meets the plan's definition of an acute onset. I have attached the FAQ link from our website about the acute onset benefit for you to review. It explains the definition of acute onset, and provides some examples that may help with understanding how that benefit works. Q:I have a medical insurance and evacuation plan already. Does this include ransom insurance? That's what I'm looking for.

A:
No, the travel outside the U.S. plans do not include Kidnap and Ransom. We do have a Kidnap and Ransom policy, and I have attached the link for that plan below. You would fill out the paper application, forward it back to us, and then you would receive a proposal of coverage to review within about 24-48 hours. After reviewing the proposal, you can decide if you would like to purchase the coverage. K&R Coverage If you have any questions after reading over the information, or need any further assistance, please let us know.
