The Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS)—which was developed by the PCI Security Standards Council (PCI SSC) created by Visa, MasterCard, American Express, Discover, and JCB—is an extensive set of technical and operational standards that a company needs to follow to ensure that all companies that process, store, or transmit credit card information maintain a secure environment.
What does it take for a company to become PCI DSS Compliant?
There are many stringent requirements, including but not limited to:
Use and maintenance of firewalls, secure networks, and systems
Proper password protections
Protection of cardholder data
Encryption of transmitted data
Use and maintenance of anti-virus protection methods
Keeping the software and systems up to date
Restriction of data access and physical access
Scanning and testing for vulnerabilities and fixing them promptly
Documentation of corporate and technical policies related to information security
PCI DSS has six major objectives, 12 key requirements, 78 base requirements, and over 400 test procedures. Click here for more information.
Why should I shop only from PCI DSS Compliant websites?
When a business is PCI-compliant, it means that that the business reviews and follows the guidelines set forth by the credit card companies to help ensure your credit card information is protected and your personal information is secure.
If you had a domestic insurance in the past (such as from your school), look at individual short term insurance instead, as you may not be eligible for plans listed in this section.
OPT Insurance for Recent Foreign Graduates
OPT insurance is a short term health insurance for recent foreign graduates until they can enroll into their employer sponsored health insurance or in other PPACA compliant health insurance. In any case, it is not a substitute for domestic major medical insurance.
What does OPT medical insurance include?
OPT medical insurance may be comprised of various benefits, some of these standard benefits may include:
Emergency Medical Expenses
OPT medical insurance will generally provide coverage for new illnesses, accidents or injuries that occur after the effective date of the policy. OPT insurance would not cover pre-existing conditions, wellness checkups, maternity or birth control. The cost of healthcare is extremely high in the U.S., that is why we recommend a higher policy maximum.
Most OPT insurance plans are PPO plans which have a wide network of doctors and hospitals all across the United States. PPO networks allow you to see any provider you choose, but participating providers can bill the insurance company directly, and would charge you only the network negotiated fees.
Some OPT insurance plans provide coverage for unexpected emergency occurring all of sudden due to pre-existing conditions under the clause called acute onset of pre-existing conditions. Even though most recent graduates are young and not likely to suffer from pre-existing conditions, this may be a useful benefit for some. This benefit is immensely helpful for older visitors to the U.S. who may be suffering from pre-existing conditions. However, this benefit will not provide any coverage for any routine maintenance of pre-existing conditions.
If there was an emergency in your home country such as one of parents passed away or your house caught fire, trip interruption coverage will help you pay to make necessary arrangements for travel to home country.
Emergency Medical Evacuation / Repatriation
If you are in a remote location and get seriously sick or injured where adequate medical facilities are not available, emergency medical evacuation will transport you to the nearest medical facility where you can receive adequate medical care. This benefit can be lifesaving to some.
Return of Mortal Remains
In the unfortunate event that you were to pass away abroad, the return of mortal remains benefit would help your family make arrangements and pay for the transportation of your remains or for local cremation.
Loss of checked luggage coverage would help pay for essentials that you might immediately need if the airline were to permanently lose your checked luggage. This benefit would be secondary to the coverage your airline would provide.
Accidental Death & Dismemberment
If you were to pass away or lose a limb or two in an accident, this benefit would make a lump sum amount payment to your family or you. Some OPT insurance plans would pay a higher amount if such an accident were to occur while traveling in a common carrier such as an airline, train, or bus.
As medical expenses are very high in the U.S. you should purchase OPT medical insurance until you qualify for a permanent major medical insurance plan that is PPACA compliant.

OPT Medical Insurance for Recent Foreign Graduates
Depending on what is most important for you to have covered, there may be a plan better tailored to your needs:
Most medical plans typically don't include any meaningful dental coverage. While people might have purchased sufficient medical coverage for illness or injuries, they forget to purchase a dental plan, until they need it all of sudden. Fortunately, we have a low cost dental plan that provides an excellent coverage and compliments the medical coverage.
In addition to the OPT medical insurance plans listed on this web page there are additional short term domestic medical insurance plans which are available to the U.S. citizens as well as U.S. residents. The minimum purchase is for 30 days and the maximum purchase is for 3 months, as per the latest government regulations. Temporary medical insurance plans provide a high medical policy maximum, typically $1 million or $2 million.
