Q:I have a question in regards to the Atlas America plan. Is the "Acute Onset of Preexisting Condition" covers a relapse for my sister in case that is happening while she is traveling to US. She has Multiple Sclerosis-MS. What is "Acute Onset of Preexisting Conditions" means? IS Multiple Sclerosis a Preexisting condition? Do you know how this is going to work: if my sister is buying a traveler insurance from her country and we also buy one from your company, how is this going to work? Which one would be primary? Also, the insurance that she would buy from home would not be something that she uses at home on a regular basis, It would be something that would purchase for US traveling. So, why Atlas would be secondary in this case? Wound be let's say which insurance we would decide to use first, primary and the other one secondary? Does it make sense to buy 2 insurances?

A:
There is not a plan that will cover anything related to a congenital or chronic illness. So there would not be a plan that would cover her pre-existing condition. The plan would be to cover the new accidents or new illness that occur after the effective date of the policy. This insurance will pay secondary to any other plan that is payable. An acute onset of a pre-existing condition is a life threatening emergency that happens related to a pre-existing. For your reference please see the legal definition listed below. ** Acute Onset of a Pre-existing Condition - a sudden and unexpected outbreak or recurrence of a pre-existing condition(s) which occurs spontaneously and without advance warning either in the form of a physician's recommendations or symptoms, is short of duration, is rapidly progressive and requires urgent care. The acute onset of a pre-existing condition (s) must occur after the effective date of the policy, Treatment must be obtained within 24 hours of the sudden and unexpected outbreak or recurrence. A pre-existing condition that is a chronic or congenital condition or that gradually become worse over time will not be considered an acute onset. This benefit does not include coverage for known, scheduled, required, or expected medical care, drugs treatment existent or necessary prior to the effective date of coverage. ** You can also view a very informative FAQ Acute Onset of a Pre-existing Condition that may assist with answering any additional question about this coverage. The plan pays secondary to any other insurance that would pay while she is visiting in the United States. This is regardless of the fact that it is purchased from outside of the U.S. It is not recommended that she purchase 2 policies for coverage. I would recommend purchasing a higher policy maximum on a U.S. based visitor insurance plan. If you have any additional questions please feel free to contact our office .

Q:I am trying to get health insurance coverage for my Father for when he visits the US. He is a US citizen who resides in Japan but would like to seek health care while visiting. He has type I diabetes and needs to see some doctors in Boston. Any advice or direction on this you could provide would be much appreciated.

A:
Thank you for your interest in purchasing insurance through us. Since he is a US citizen, if he is eligible for a long term domestic plan then that plan will cover any treatments he is wanting while in the US. If he is not eligible for a yearlong domestic plan then he can purchase a short term domestic, depending on his age, or a visitors plan. The short term plans will not cover any pre-existing conditions or preventative care or routine treatment. The plans for visitors to the US will cover any new illness or injury that occurs after the effective date of the plan. If you need additional assistance please feel free to contact our office.
