Q:I'm Shao-Wei Tsai. I will work in UIUC campus with a J1 VISA.I'd like to apply for the ExchangeGaurd Insurance plan for me and for my wife (with a J2 VISA).Currently, my wife is pregnant at approximately 14 weeks, so I'd like to ask is there any other suggested plan can cover her J2 VISA requirements and her pregnancy requirements. Thank you.

A:
The Exchange Guard plan does not provide any pregnancy benefits. Any of our J1/J2 plans that do provide some coverage, would have to be active before conception. Therefore, we would not have any plans that can cover your wife's pregnancy. If you have additional questions, please let us know.

Q:My dad had hernia surgey recently in India. He will be traveling to US for about a month. He is completely fit now and have rested enough as per doctors recommendations. While visiting US, if the stitches ruptures, or if he needs to do the hernia surgery again because of any unprecedented reason like an accident, will that be covered in acute onset of pre-existing conditions?

A:
An acute onset is an unexpected and sudden emergency. If the stitches were to rupture, that is something that could happen based on his current situation and would be something that could be expected to possibly happen. So it would depend on exactly what were to happen to determine coverage under acute onset at the time of an incident. Here is our FAQ on acute onset for you to review: /visitor-insurance-acute-onset-of-pre-existing-conditions/ We do have a plan that can provide some pre-existing condition coverage if fit to travel and not traveling to specifically obtain medical care. However, the plan would need to be purchased before departure from home country, it would include a separate benefit level for the pre-existing cnditions based on his age, and comes with an individual $1500 dedutible. It also has a 90 day minimum purchase so even if you enter in 30 days for example, it would still quote you for 90, and it is not extendable so you would need to purchase for the full duration of the stay. /visitors-protect-insurance/ If you have additional questions, please let us know.

Q:My daughter, us citizen, and her fiancee, UK citizen, applied for a received, after 12 months, a US Fiancee Visa. He came to the US and they were married within the 90 day timeframe. They are applying for his permanent visa, green card, which we are told will take another 9 to12 months. I would like to purchase health insurance for him but he does not have a US social security number or drivers license yet. They live in Florida. Can you help? Thank you, Bill Whelan on behalf of Troy Lawrence.

A:
People in the United States who have filed for an Adjustment of Status, Green Card, may purchase the Safe Travels USA Comprehensive plan and have it until they are notified their Green Card is approved; then they must cancel this plan and purchase one for Green Card holders.

Q:My parents who are 84 & 81 years old with some pre existing conditions like diabetes, hypertension, visiting us in Atlanta on visitor visa from India. What is the best health insurance options that I can buy?

A:
Two popular plans for this age group are the Safe Travels USA Comprehensive and the Visitors Protect. Visitors Insurance plans are primarily designed to provide coverage for new illnesses, injuries or accidents that exist in the body or occur after the policy effective date. The Visitors Protect plan will provide coverage for pre-existing conditions up to $20,000. Please keep in mind that this policy must be purchased before your parents leave their home country, they must be medically fit to travel, and not be traveling for the sole purpose of obtaining medical treatment. The Safe Travels USA Comprehensive plan includes coverage for the acute onset of pre-existing conditions up to $35,000, and up to $15,000 for cardiac conditions or stroke.
