Malaysia Travel Insurance

Malaysia Travel Insurance

Malaysia Travel Medical Insurance is an essential consideration for anyone traveling to Malaysia for any purpose, whether for leisure or business reasons. Malaysia ended their mandatory requirement for travel insurance on May 1, 2022. However, insurance is still highly recommended. Breakthrough COVID-19 infections are still possible even if you are fully vaccinated, and you are still always at risk of another illness or injury. Travel medical insurance can help protect you from high treatment costs.

Malaysia Entry Requirements

Malaysia updated their entry requirements on May 1, 2022. Currently, visitors who are fully vaccinated, children age 12 and under with any vaccination status, and visitors who can prove they have recovered from COVID-19 between six and 60 days of departure will no longer have to take a pre-departure COVID-19 RT-PCR test, or a post-arrival test once they are in Malaysia.

However, visitors to Malaysia who are not fully vaccinated for COVID-19 will still be required to take both an RT-PCR test two days prior to departure, and a professionally administered RTK-Ag test within 24 hours of their arrival in Malaysia. Visitors who are not fully vaccinated will also have to complete a five-day quarantine. Children who are 17 years of age and younger are exempt from the quarantine requirement.

Travel Risks for Tourists Visiting Malaysia

Malaysia is generally considered a safe country for tourists to visit. However, as with any international destination, there are certain safety tips you should keep in mind.

Tropical Cyclones

Be aware that tropical cyclone season in the South Pacific Ocean usually runs between November 1 and April 30 annually. Malaysia has experienced its fair share of tropical cyclones, also known as hurricanes or typhoons. Tropical Storm Jangmi struck in 2014, and Tropical Storm Vamei struck in 2001, causing more than $3.5 million USD in damage. As you’re shopping for travel insurance, be sure to select a plan that includes tropical cyclone coverage to ensure peace of mind if you’re visiting during that time of year.

Petty Crime

Pickpockets are the bane of any tourist destination, and crowded areas of Malaysia are no exception. Simply keep your valuables secure at all times, and never leave your bags unattended to prevent crimes of opportunity.

Heat-Related Illnesses

The climate in Malaysia is tropical, with an average temperature of 26°C (80°F) and little seasonal variance. It also tends to be quite humid. If you are not used to this sort of climate, you can be prone to heat exhaustion and dehydration. Take care of your body by drinking plenty of clean water, and take frequent breaks from strenuous activities.

Top Places to Visit for Travelers to Malaysia

Kuala Lumpur

The capital of Malaysia is Kuala Lumpur. The Petronas Towers are twin towers, and for many years they were the world's tallest buildings. A sky bridge connects the two towers. An observation deck on the top provides fantastic views of the city of Kuala Lumpur. Bukit Bintang is the central shopping district of Kuala Lumpur.

Batu Caves

The Batu Caves have Hindu temples inside the caves and are located in Gombak, Selangor. At the entrance to the Batu Caves, you will see a huge statue of the god Murugan. While visiting there, be careful of the monkeys - they might snatch your food or other belongings.

Redang Island

Redang Island is ideal for beach lovers. It offers crystal-clear ocean water and white-sand beaches. Therefore, it is a very popular place for snorkeling. However, make sure that you have appropriate travel insurance to cover such water activities. Another popular beach destination is Langkawi.

Sipadan

In Sipadan, you will see the turtles eating sponges and algae or simply lazing on the wall ledges. Overall, Sipadan has diverse marine life and gorgeous tropical scenery.

Before you travel to Malaysia, do this:

  • As Malaysia is a warm country all year-round and located close to the equator, you should carry light clothes. You should also bring adequate sun-protection lotion.
  • Make sure to fix the prices upfront for any taxi ride to avoid any unpleasant experience later.
  • While visiting Malaysia, it is vital to take appropriate travel insurance in case you get sick or injured unexpectedly.
