Q:I want to buy insurance for a family member visiting USA. He got kidney transplant in 2019 which would be considered pre-existing condition. Looking at options it seems buying two insurances would provide better coverage. My two choices are Atlas America, which would provide better coverage for non pre-existing conditions, and Visitors Protect, which would provide coverage for anything related to kidney pre-existing conditions.1) Am I legally allowed to buy two insurances?2) How would claims work in case of any medical visits/treatments? Do I have choice to pick which insurance I want to use?

A:
Your general assessment is correct. Atlas America has a co-insurance of 100/0, meaning that it will pay 100% to the policy max for new injuries' or illnesses, while Visitors Protect will have a 75/25 co-insurance. 1) Yes, legally, you may purchase as many plans as you would like, as long as they are from different administrators. With that being said, we would not recommend purchasing more than two plans, as the claims process can become quite difficult for the patient if they have more that two plans. 2) Regarding the claims process, If anything is to happen, you will always need to file a claim, even if the doctor's office or hospital says they will submit a claim. On that claims form there is a question asking if you have any additional policies in place, to which you will have to answer honestly under risk of perjury. At that point, the insurance companies will coordinate their benefits on how they are going to pay out your claim, so you would not be able to choose which policy would would like to use. Please be advised that all plans, including Visitors Protect, will not cover for any known or expected treatment, preventive care, or routine maintenance of any condition, for any reason. It must be an unexpected occurrence and you cannot be coming to the US for treatment.
