Q:Is it better to be un-insured? My mom has the Inbound Immigrant plan. Her first and only claim was denied because of the pre-existing condition provision. The physician's billing office told us that if she were un-insured, she could get a self-pay discount of 40%. However, because she has insurance, even if the insurance does not cover anything, she is not eligible for the self-pay discount and is required to pay the full bill. The logic of the medical system is not clear, but we have to deal with it. Hopefully my mom's experience is useful for your decisions. May your families be well!

A:
Please note that new immigrant insurance plans are not meant to cover anything and everything that may happen to them. However, it does not mean that the person should be uninsured. Even though you may be worried about pre-existing conditions, you never know what kind of new medical conditions, injuries or accidents that you may run into that occur after the effective date of the policy. Therefore, it is always advisable to buy the insurance. Actually that's not true. Even in the most optimistic scenario, when the treatment is definitely covered by an insurance policy, if the self-pay discount is greater than the insurance limit minus insurance premium, one is better off being un-insured. This is especially relevant for the elderly, as the maximum limit is lower and medical bill could be higher (higher likelihood of complications). Add this to medical bills from illnesses that may be considered pre-existing conditions... It is more advisable for consumers to know the cost and benefits of insurance policies. It is certainly your decision whether you would like to purchase the insurance or not. Please note that Inbound Immigrant is a fixed coverage plan and pays a fixed amount for each and every procedure. However, depending upon the age and the state of the new immigrant, there are comprehensive coverage plans that pay much higher and cost more money. Therefore, we always recommend everyone to always comprehensive coverage plans and never the fixed coverage plans.

Q:Atlas America - Acute onset of preexisting... for 55+ Hello: I'm looking for a policy for my parents aged 58 and 51. My father (58) has diabetes. Regarding Atlas America, I noticed in an earlier thread (from last year). >> 2. Effective May 1, 2012, acute onset of pre-existing conditions is effectively restricted to people under the age of 55 years. Does this still apply to Atlas America plans? I also noticed that you recommend to purchase plans separately for multiple individuals. Would you still advise the same in this scenario? Thanks, Sriram.

A:
1. That does not apply currently. That restriction was lifted in August, 2012. 2. Yes, we always recommend you to do seapare applications for each person. You can purchase Atlas America insurance at /atlasamerica-insurance/ If you have any other questions, please feel free to post them here or contact us at any time.

Q:Liaison Continent vs Atlas America Hi, Can you please help me choose better insurance for my parents. I see that Liaison is considered as best insurance....but i do not see much difference between Liaison continent and Atlas America...can you kindly explain what are the benefits of Liaison continent over Atlas America. Also I read somewhere that Atlas`s "Acute Onset of a Pre-existing Condition Benefit" is only on papers, but practically it is not provided. Is it really so ? P.S. My father is 59 and mother is 56, both take blood pressure tablet on daily basis. They are planning to live in US for little less than 6 months. Thanks

A:
Liaison Continent and Atlas America are two excellent plans from two competiting companies. Both of them periodically make changes and introduce the features/benefits that is better than the others. What is best is really subjective and a matter of personal opinion. Therefore, you would be fine with either Liaison Continent or Atlas America. You can compare both the plans side by side at https://www.insubuy.com and you will see that there is indeed not much difference. If you have a question about a specific aspect, please let us know and we would be glad to clarify it. What you read "somewhere" is absolutely not true. As long as it is indeed acute onset of pre-existing conditions, both Atlas America and Liaison Continent will up to the stated maximum for people below the age of 70 years. I hope that answers your questions. If you have any further questions, please feel free to post them here or contact us at any time. Please read /compare-visitors-insurance/ to understand the different between Atlas America and Liaison Continent.

Q:Insurance advise for parents ... My dad is 70 and mom 60. Mom has diabetes, while dad is healthy and not on any medications. What insurance should I go for? I looked at insubuy webpage and it suggests buying them seperately for more options. Is there any advantage/disadvantage to buy them separately? Dad doesn't have any diabetes/BP etc. But still, I am paranoid about some insurance company declaring a condition as preexisting. Are there any that covers pre-existing conditions for 70+ patients? Is it better to buy with no preexisting for dad and with preexisting for mom? Thanks!

A:
Realistically, there are really no plans that cover pre-existing conditions in any form for 70+. There are some plans that provide little coverage: Visitors Care: /visitors-care-insurance/ If additional option is purchased, if the person is admitted into the hospital due to heart attack or stroke that is due to pre-existing conditions, it will pay max $2,500. Safe Travels USA: /safe-travels-usa-insurance/ $1,000 in acute onset of pre-existing conditions. Liaison Majestic: /atlasamerica-insurance/ If the person is admitted into the hospital due to heart attack or stroke that is due to pre-existing conditions, it will pay $200/night, max $3,000. Therefore, you can see that there is really no proper coverage for 70+ for anything related to pre-existing conditions. We generally advise everyone to buy separate policies due to many advantages in terms of flexibility of choice of plans, renewability, refund etc. The price is per person, deductible is person, policy max is per person anyway. Some plans mandate you to do separate policies anyway and in that case, there is no choice. I would recommend that you purchase Atlas America Insurance for your mother at /atlasamerica-insurance/ If you would like to purchase $50,000 for your father, you can buy the same Atlas America Insurance for your father too. For $100,000, consider Patriot Platinum America insurance at /patriot-america-platinum-insurance/ I hope that answers your questions. If you have any other questions, please feel free to post them here or contact us at any time. My father is actually 69 and will be turning 70 when he is in US. Is it the age at coverage that matters? Also, is ImmigrantSecure a good plan for 100k for both of them? I think having PPO network will get me negotiated charges. What is your opinion? When the person is 69 years of age, he will get coverage according to the age 69 years. When he turns 70, his coverage will be according to the age 70. Immigrant Secure is a fixed coverage plan. In other words, it is a scheduled benefit plan and has sub-limits for each and every medical benefit. Please read about it at /visitors-insurance/ We always recommend everyone to buy only the comprehensive coverage plans. Even with PPO network's network negotiated fees, you will have to pay a large balance out of your pocket. If he is 69 years, and I buy initially for one month and renew later on, will the rate go up once he crosses 70? In general, yes, that would be the case. However, it depends upon the plan you purchase. Therefore, if you can tell me specifically which plans you are referring to, I can provide more accurate information. Thanks for shearing your nice and helpful post and good information for us.It may be helpful for me.

Q:J1+2J2s health insurance Hi, I am going to visit USF as a visiting scholar in the mid May. I will apply J1 VISA FOR MYSELF and J2 VISAs for my wife and my 5-year old daughter. They will arrive in US two months later. I have viewed some insurance plans on your web-site and I am interested in two of them, Patriot Exchange Program and Inbound USA. My questions are: 1. Are these two plans meet the insurance requiremnent of USF? 2. Which one will be more suitable for me and my family members as J1 and J2 status? 3. The co-insu of these two plan is ?% 4. When I purchase a annule plan for 12 months, if this plan will cover my dependents automatically? Or we should buy a seperate insurance for my daughter and my wife? 5. Can we buy a insurance month by month for my daughter and wife, because they will stay in USA for only a short period of time (4-8 weeks)? 6. The Patriot Exchange Program notes that J2s eligible to purchase only if the J1 holder is insured with the same plan. is it saying that my family members must all buy insurance from this specific progrm when I have selected this? 7. How can I purchase them? Sorry for so many questions, I will appreciate it if you could answer me point by point. Thanks! Song

A:
1. Please let us know what the requirements are and we will let you know which plans meet those requirements. 2. Once we know your requirements, we can suggest you better. 3. Patriot Exchange Program: 100% Inbound USA: Not Applicable. It is a fixed coverage plan. Please read the details at /safe-travels-elite-insurance/ 4. You need to pay for each person you would like to insure. As they are arriving later, you will have to make a separate application for them. 5. You can buy the insurance for the duration they will be in the US. 6. That is correct. 7. Patriot Exchange Program: /patriot-exchange-program-insurance/ Inbound USA: /safe-travels-elite-insurance/ Thank you so much for your rapid reply. The insurance plan provided by USF itself is too expensive for my family to afford it (around $2400 for J1 and 4000 for J2). Is the Patriot exchange program suitable for my daughter, she is only 5-years old. Below is the USF insurance requirement, which is described in DS2019 request form : For health insurance, you and your family can either use USF’s plan, which covers the mandate for J visa holders, or if you use your own insurance, you can have the company complete a compliance form which we will send you with the DS2019. Health Insurance Requirement Immigration regulations require that all J exchange visitors have health insurance that meets the following minimum federal requirements: • Medical benefits of at least $50,000 per accident or illness • Repatriation of remains in the amount of $7,500 • Expenses associated with the medical evacuation of the exchange visitor to his or her home country in the amount of $10,000 • A deductible not to exceed $500 per accident or illness. USF Student Health Services insurance policy for international students, graduate students, and postdoctoral fellows meets this requirement and is recommended for use by all USF exchange visitors. Policy information, current costs, and sign-up is available at https://www.usf.edu/student-affairs/student-health-services/ The requirements you mentioned are simply standard J visa insurance requirements. Therefore, both the plans you mentioned will meet those requirements. However, I would recommend Patriot Exchange Program as it is a comprehensive coverage unlike Inbound USA that has sub-limits for each and every medical benefit. Yes, you can buy Patriot Exchange Program for your daughter as long as you buy the same plan for yourself or you buy through your school for yourself. Please let us know if you have any other questions. Hi, I am back again. The university sent me one insurance compliance form which I should have the company complete to show that my insurance meet the requirements of USF, and I would bring the form with me when I come to check in. Could you please find the attached document? 3 Another question is how can I buy the insurance in China? I want to settle insurance down before my leaving for USA. Thank you so much. You can purchase any of the plans listed at /j1-visa-health-insurance/ You can purchase before or after arrival in the USA. Can Insubuy complete the insurance comliance form which was sent to me by USF? I should take it to USF when I check in. Yes, once you purchase the insurance, we can get that completed and send it back to you. Could you please mail me the original ducument with someone's signature on it? but not a pdf version by email. I will be in USF in 9 May. Should I buy my insurance month to month or I should buy it for 12 months? May thanks! You can get the documents by postal mail. However, they will look exactly the same that you see by email. Now a days, everything is computer printed and no one does hand written signatures on such documents. In all plans, buying and paying is the same duration. If you want to buy for 12 months, you need to pay for 12 months upfront. For Patriot Exchange Program, in order to renew in future, you must purchase initially for 3 months. After that, you can renew month by month. But if you need the proof that you have the insurance for 12 months, you must pay for 12 months upfront. Thanks! I will try to buy it as soon as possible. I have purchased my insuance from Insubuy. The Certificate Number is EPSNI80974525. Could you please to complete the insurance comliance form for me? How can I send you the PDF version? Please send it to info at insubuy.com I wil study as a Visiting Scholar at Columbia University from September 2014 to September 2015. I will come to New York with my dependents ( wife and a child). Shoud I do health insurance yearly at the beginning. I wonder If I can obtain health insurance per period one by one (Autumn-Winter-Summer) because of the yearly prices considerably high rather than periodical prices. Is it Ok for my dependents (j2) when I buy the insurance through /j1-visa-health-insurance/ including dependents information. Should I buy sparately health insurance for them Thank you very much in advance You can purchase insurance just for yourself or for yourself and your dependents together. It is entirely your choice. You can either purchase the insurance for few months at a time or you can purchase for the entire year at a time. The total premium would remain the same in either case. However, in some (not all) plans, whenever you renew, there may be $5 renewal fee.
