Question:

Health Insurance - Heart Disease Hi My father-in-law had a heart attack 3 yrs back and has undergone a by-pass surgery. He is planning to visit us in US. Is there any medical insurance available that will cover emergency hospitalization expenses such as heart attack . Pls suggest. Thanks.

Answer:

How old is he? What state is he coming to?

Around 64. We are in Illinois.

Consider purchasing either Atlas America Insurance or Liaison Continent Insurance. Both of them will cover up to $15,000 in acute onset of pre-existing conditions for people below the age of 70 years. I hope that answers your questions. If you have any other questions, please feel free to post them here or contact us at any time.

Practically, there is no plan that would cover acute onset of pre-existing conditions for people of the age 70 years and above. However, look at /pre-existing-conditions-coverage-visitors-health-insurance/ You will see Inbound USA and Visitors Care. They cover up to $3,000 or $2,500 respectively if the person is admitted into the hospital due to heart or stroke that is due to pre-existing conditions. Please note that both are fixed coverage plans and pay only a portion of the actual expenses even for new medical conditions. We always recommend everyone to buy comprehensive coverage plans only.

So is there any plan that can cover cancer as a pre existing condition. Ofcourse just the onset in case something comes up. Please advice.

No. Unlike heart attack type situation, in most cases, you don't need immediate treatment for cancer. In almost all cases, if cancer is detected and is pre-existing condition, you can just put the person in the plane to their home country and can get treated there.

In almost all cases, if cancer is detected and is pre-existing condition, you can just put the person in the plane to their home country and can get treated there. Very true. But here is a situation that could come up with my dad. He is a prostate cancer patient who had undergone radiation for the same and is doing fine now. It is possible that he might get little pain or some kind of stinging sensation while urinating something like UTI in ladies for which the urologist may need to prescribe some medication if needed. This is currently not happening but had happened sometime in the past when he was undergoing radiation. So in case such pain arises will it be covered under the pre-existing condition or not? If Yes based on the acute onset of pre-existing condition then which one would you recommend? He is 70+. Please advise. Thank you.

There is no plan available anywhere in the market that would cover that. You will have to pay for those expenses yourself. Before deciding to invite him, that is what you will have to decide whether you are willing to pay for those expenses yourself or not.
