Harvey Mudd College (HMC), located in Claremont, California, was established in 1955. It’s one of the Claremont colleges, a consortium of five undergraduate schools and two graduate schools that share adjacent campuses and university resources. HMC is a liberal arts college with a focus on engineering, science, and mathematics; its namesake is Harvey S. Mudd, a founder of the Cyprus Mines Corporation who helped plan the new university but died before it opened in 1957. It was founded during the heat of the Space Race with the Soviet Union, when technical education (and the launch of Sputnik in particular) made technical education a priority in the United States.
Today, HMC enrolls about 900 students and counting each year. The school colors are black and gold, and its athletic nicknames are the stags (men) and the Athenas (women).
Harvey Mudd College offers a focused curriculum with ten majors: biology, chemistry, computer science, engineering, mathematics, physics, and joint majors in chemistry and biology, computer science and mathematics, mathematical and computational biology, and mathematics and physics. However, each program includes a “healthy dose” of humanities and social science courses to give students a more well-rounded approach to their careers and to life in general. It also offers hands-on experience through research projects and the Clinic Program, which partners groups of students with corporate sponsors to complete a yearlong corporate project.
Notable Harvey Mudd College alumni include Donald D. Chamberlin, co-inventor of the SQL programming language; astronauts George “Pinky” Nelson and Stan Love; professional poker player Joe Pelton; and Academy Award-winning visual effects supervisor Scott Stokdyk.
