Question:

Visitor Insurance - Advice Needed Hi, My Parents are 68 & 66 Years old and they are visiting this month and will be staying for around 51/2 months. I need advice on the type of coverage to go Fixed Coverage or Comprehensive Coverage. They are in good health and i confused which one to select. Last time i have take Patriotic America and it was very expensive. Please advice which one i can choose. What is the disadvantage of having Fixed Coverage. Thanks Vijay Anand Kannan

Answer:

We always recommend everyone to buy comrehensive plan, never the fixed coverage plan. Please read /visitors-insurance/ to understand more. Fixed coverage plans only pay a fraction of the actual costs: Real examples that I have seen in last two weeks: Two days in the hospital: Bill - over $42,000. Fixed coverage paid $1,400/day. That is total $2,800. The customer has to pay the rest. Two days in the hospital: Bill - over $20,000. Fixed coverage paid $1,400/day. That is total $2,800. The customer has to pay the rest. Visit to emergency room: Total stay - 4 hours 10 minutes. No treatment, just tests and observation. Total bill - Over $16,000. Fixed coverage paid $330. The customer has to pay the rest. The healthcare costs in this country are very high. Even the most minor surgery can cost you easily $8,000 to $10,000. I just got back from the dentist appointment few minutes ago, and even with insurance, I paid $1,170 from my pocket. (That is exactly why I am replying after few hours. Otherwise, I would have replied right away). Did you know that a couple in their thirties with two kids would pay around $1,500/month in their domestic long term health insurance (with low copay, low deductible and low out of pocket max), if the employer didn't contribute anything? Expensive or low cost is a very relative term. Looking at the amount of coverage the comprehensive plans provide, they are very reasonably priced. Therefore, you can judge yourself and make an educated decision. If you have any further questions, please feel free to contact us any time.

Thanks for you advice. It cleared my thoughts and going with either Patriotic America or Atlas.

You are welcome. I am glad that you are making the right decision.
