Question:

Insurance for parents in Maryland I am a student in Maryland. My parents (aged 69 and 53) would be visiting me from Oct 3 to Dec 27 of this year. They are both Indian citizens and would be coming to the US only for vacation. They do not have any preexisting known illnesses. It would be great if you could share your thoughts on some of these questions 1. I am looking to buy a comprehensive insurance from an American company. As far as the PPO network goes, which one has a better presence in Maryland state Is there anyway I can see a list of Doctors and Hospitals that are innetwork with these PPOs on a website before deciding which plan to buy. The reason I am asking this question is because Atlas lists Hygeia as its PPO network, but when I called up about 5 or 6 doctor's clinic that were listed on Hygeia's webpage, none of them even knew about Hygeia. It would be great if you could suggest a better way of making an informed decision. 2. As a student, my budget is limited, but I still want to go with the comprehensive coverage because of my father's age. What would you recommend, considering that they have no problems until now, to be the coverage maximum Is 50k enough, or should it be atleast 100k, based on your experience 3. Although my parents do not have any known preexisting conditions, some insurance companies might claim that a new problem was caused by preexisting problems like sugar, BP or even simple problems like throat infections and so on. I know that based on the experiences on this website, chances of this happening are low. But in case it happens, what is the process of proving to the insurance company that it is indeed a new problem, and not a preexisting condition Should I then advise my parents to bring their medical records with them when they come here Thanks in advance Atul

Answer:

1. Look at /visitor-insurance/ Next to each plan, there is a link 'Provider Directory'. You were already looking at the right place. Atlas America participates in Hygeia as well as First Health PPO networks. Therefore, as long as the provider recognizes either of them, you are fine. Both the logos would be printed on the id card. 2. Even though many people buy 50k because that is the cheapest available, I recommend 100k. Many times, the expenses go beyond 50k easily when something serious happens. You may want to choose higher deductible like $1000 to reduce your premiums. 3. Prior medical records and a letter from the current treating doctor would be of help to file an appeal. Please feel free to contact us at any time if you have any other questions.

Thank you very much for the quick and helpful response. I have one more question: What is meant by indemnity? In the Patriot America plan, an indemnity payment of $100 is included for stay overnight in a hospital. How is this different from room/ board? Thanks again Atul

Indemnity is in addition to the room/board cost. It pays $100/each night for other pocket expenses like food, taxi, phone, misc etc. However, please note that this daily indemnity applies only outside US/Canada.

Could anyone suggest a suitable insurance for my visiting parents. They have no pre existing conditions and will be here for 6 months. They are aged around 64 and 61. Earlier we were planning on getting an insurace from India (Oriental or New India) but was advised not to. I ha been hunting around for and the more I look I am more confused. I have looked at the AIG insurance from kvrao.org, certain insurances from this site. I am looking for a $100,000 coverage with $250 deductabile. Please advise which one to go with and are more reliable know for their services.

While you look at any insurance plan, first make sure whether it is a fixed coverage plan or the comprehensive coverage plan. You can read more about it at /visitors-insurance/ Some people claim it is a comprehensive coverage plan, when it is a fixed coverage plan in reality. In that case, look (or ask them) whether there are any sub-limits in the coverage. If so, it is a fixed coverage plan. Look carefully at all the details. We always recommend everyone to buy comprehensive coverage plans only and never the fixed coverage plans. Particularly, look at Patriot America plan at /patriot-america-lite-insurance/ It is comprehensive coverage plan with reasonable cost, excellent PPO (First Health) and good service.

How does the fixed cverage plan in USA compare with the insurance in India like the Oriental insurance or New India Insurancee?

I suggest that you read the article /visitors-insurance-usa-india-comparison/ It describes in very detail the difference between buying from US and India. After reading that, if you have any specific question, please feel free to post here.

Between "visitors Care" and "Inbound USA" which one do you recommend based on your experience and knowledge.

Both are excellent and very popular plans. However, there are few differences: * Visitors Care participates in First Health PPO network while Inbound USA doesn't have any PPO. * Deductible is once per period of coverage in Visitors Care while it is per incident in Inbound USA. * The policy maximum is life time in Visitors Care while it is per incident in Inbound USA. Therefore, I suggest that you visit https://www.insubuy.com and compare them side by side in detail and pick one according to which feature difference is more important to you.
