Question:

Hello, I am an American citizen living abroad. I have lived in Rwanda the past 5 years. My husband and I are about to have our first child this August. Most basic medical treatment is available here, but I am looking specifically for major medical insurance for our child. From all prenatal appointments, he is set to be a healthy child, this is simply planning for worst case scenario, the kind you hope you never face. There are basically three categories of major medical care that we would need to travel abroad for: heart surgery, transplant of any kind, and cancer of any form. I am looking just for a major medical plan, and if possible, just for our child. Also, I'm willing to furnish any proof of his good health throughout pregnancy, and, presumably at birth. Right now, I'm just trying to get a basic idea of what's available and what cost we are looking at. HIghest deductible would be best as we would not use this for minor medical procedures.

Answer:

There is no plan on the market that you can purchase that will work for this. Most plans will start coverage only after the child is a couple of weeks old and if there is already a situation that you want taken care of in the US the plan would not cover it since it would have been existing at birth. Plans will not cover pre-existing conditions. If you have additional questions please feel free to contact our office.
