Question:

increasing coverage Hi, I took a Atlas America insurance for my father in law. since he was healthy (except for diabates which was under control), I took a $50,000 limit plan. Immediately after taking insurance he fainted and fell. I took him to ER and ended up doing open heart surgery. I believe, the cost of surgery and hospital care would exceed $50,000. Is there any way I can bump up the coverage limit now? Also if I take another plan and ask the hospital to split the bills, will it work? Please suggest a solution. Thank you, Vijay

Answer:

It is too late now to attempt to increase the coverage limit. No insurance company would allow you to increase the limit if you believe the expenses would exceed the policy limit. Even if you try to purchase another plan, the existing condition would be considered as pre-existing condition and not covered under the new plan. No company would offer you the insurance just to immediately give away lots of money when it is already known loss. It is not true that healthy people would select lower policy maximum (or no insurance) and sick people would select higher policy maximum, as insurance does not work like that. Please note that insurance is for unforeseen risks that may occur after the effective date of the policy. That means that the health insurance is for healthy people (or for new health problems that occur after the effective date of the policy) and not for those who are already sick. Therefore, it is very important to choose the right policy maximum initially itself. I hope that answers your questions.
