Travel Medical Insurance

Question:

Pre-Existing Medical Conditions (for a 66 yo). Can somebody please advise if the following conditions are covered: Atrial Flutter (treated successfully 3 years ago by Ablation; no medication required) Mytonic Dystrophy Type I (diagnosed 6 years ago, considered to be mild, no cardiac-related issues)Skin Cancer (Melanoma) skin lesion successfully exised, no follow up treatment required. We are NZ citizens wishing to holiday in Hawaii and can not get coverage in our own country (due to age, and destination)

Answer:

Thank you for contacting Insubuy. Visitors Insurance plans are not designed to cover pre-existing conditions. They are primarily designed to cover new illness, injuries or accidents that manifest or occur after the effective date of the policy. Most plans will have a look-back period of either 2 or 3 years. So if there is any condition that the insured receives medical advise, diagnosis, care, treatment, or the condition manifested itself during that time period it is considered a pre-existing condition and not covered under Visitors Insurance.

There are many plans that will include coverage for the acute onset of pre-existing conditions. An acute onset of pre-existing conditions is a sudden and unexpected recurrence of a pre-existing condition that is rapidly progressive, occurs spontaneously, and without advance warning and requires urgent care.

In regards to the medical situations you have listed, as long as the situation is not a listed exclusion in the policy then it can be covered unless it is pre-existing as defined above. If it is pre-existing then the only type of coverage that is available for a visitor to the US is the acute onset of pre-existing condition.

When purchasing you are not asked to provide any health or medical information. The claims department will make their final decision based on the medical records that are generated at the time of the incident and the attending physicians statement or doctors notes. If you have any additional questions, please feel free to contact our office at +1 (866) INSUBUY 467-8289.
