Question:

insurance for climbing over 7000 meters Hi, I am going on a climbing expedition to Nepal on a mountain over 7000 meters and will be using special climbing equipment. I have already purchased search and rescue through Global Rescue. Where in the past many insurance companies provided medical insurance for such activities should injuries happen, now I am having difficulty to find such coverage. Can you help me /direct me to the right organization and the right coverage please. I looked up Atlas International to buy their Sports Rider pac which I could not find. When I spoke to them they told me it automatically comes with their Atlas Travel pack now where as in the past it was sold as an add-on. Is this correct information that I have been Given? Plus when I looked at their exclusions it says if a climb is over 4500 meters then it is not covered. However I read in one of the forums here from 2011 that the Sports Rider pac will eliminate the excision !!!! Now you can see why I need help! One more note, I am a Canadian citizen but current live in Dubai. The reason I say this is because some insurance companies are particular about the citizenship and the residence. Thank you in advance

Answer:

Yes, you can purchase Atlas International plan. Please look at the latest certificate wording at /hccmis/atlas-america/description-visitors-insurance.pdf You will see that there is no restriction of 4500 meters. Yes, it is correct that earlier the sports rider was optional, but now a days, it is automatically included. You can purchase it online at /atlas-international-insurance/ Regarding your activities above 4500 meters, even though not specific to your mountain peak, the following pages may help you: /kailash-mansarovar-yatra-travel-insurance/ /mount-kilimanjaro-travel-insurance/ If you have any other questions, please feel free to post them here or contact us at any time.

Thank you for providing clarification. However the link on the Atlas website states differently. Http://www.hccmis.com/atlas-travel-insurance-coverage/. Please look at number 27 under Other Exclusions section. Furthermore I have had the below email exchange with them. *********** Mehdi, Our policy will not cover mountain heights of 4500 feet or higher, and we do not have any kind riders that you can put on our policies. Again, I do apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused you. From: Mehdi Attarha Sent: Monday, September 23, 2013 3:24 PM To: Johnson, Mario Subject: RE: Medical emergency coverage for mountaineering in Nepal Dear Mario, Thank you for the prompt response and providing the direct link. Prior to purchasing the insurance coverage can you please clarify the following points; - The suggested insurance coverage covers medical emergency for mountaineering/climbing to mountains overs 7000 meters using special climbing equipment? The reason I ask is because when I read the details the exclusions state that if a mountain is over 4500 the medical emergency costs will not be covered. However in the past your organization had a plan called "Sports Rider" which would cover such costs. Saying this I can't find the Sports Rider pac any longer. Can you please clarify this matter and let me know if medical emergencies for my upcoming activity is covered with the plan you have suggested and sent the link for? - The fact that I am a Canadian citizen but living abroad does not make change things. Again the reason I ask is because some insurance companies are particular about this matter and I just want to be clear. - From the provider link you send me I noticed there are a couple of Direct billing Hospitals/Clinics and some Extended. Can you please clarify what Extended means? Thank you in advance and looking forward to hearing back from you. Best Regards, Mehdi +971557007848 ********* Again more confusion. What is the date of the issue of the certificate link you sent me. The link I provided on the message is what I copied and pasted today. Thank you and looking forward to hearing from you.

There is a confusion at the insurance company's side and they have different versions on their own web site. I am working with the higher management of the insurance company trying to clear up this confusion. Once it has been cleared up, I will post the results here. Sorry for the confusion caused by the insurance company.

Thank you. Would you be able to give me a timeline as I am going on my climb on oct 12th and need to purchase this insurance. Otherwise would you be able to give me an alternate option? Again thank you in advance.

1. I should hear back mostly today or tomorrow. We need to get this clarified as soon as possible. 2. Unfortunately, I don't have any other alternate options as that height, especially if you don't have the US address.

Thank you and looking forward to your update

I received the response from the Vice President of the insurance company that the one we have on our web site is the correct one and they will fix their version. However, I am not confident about the whole situation. Therefore, I leave it up to you whether you would like to buy it or not. /atlas-international-insurance/

Thank you for all your help

I am pleased to inform that the version on their web site has now been corrected and it does not reflect the restriction of 4500 meters. In other words, the information on our web site has been accurate all along. You can purchase it online at /atlas-international-insurance/

Excellent. Once again thank for your excellent support.
