Question:

Fiance Insurance I’d like to inquire as to health insurance for my partner. I’m looking into the possibility of taking a job in California and would like to know if it would be affordable to cover my fiancé. She currently suffers from Lupus and requires specialist medical care which makes me think the premiums will likely be unaffordable but I’d like to find out regardless. Kind Regards

Answer:

Hello, Thank you for contacting Insubuy for your insurance needs. Please advise the visa type and country of citizenship that your fiancé is currently in the United States on so that a proper plan recommendation can be made.

Hi thanks for the reply. We haven't applied for Visas yet (i'm looking into whether it is possible for us to afford the inevitably huge medical insurance costs for her existing Lupus before I apply for roles). I believe she would have to get a dependents Visa - I would be applying for roles in my industry (video games / animation). Sorry if all this is vague and can't answer your question. I've not had to deal with Visa's since I did a year abroad in 2002 and thought that would be my next step if supporting my fiancé is affordable. Ideally she'd get an offer too so that we could both seek appropriate visas and not be a dependent. Would this affect health insurance quotes?

The visa status will not affect the cost but it will determine what plans she will be eligible for. The plans we offer are short term plans that do not cover pre-existing conditions, routine maintenance or preventative care. There are no plans on the market for visitors that will cover these things. If you are looking specifically for plans to cover her pre-existing conditions then you would have to purchase a domestic plan when she becomes eligible. The cost of a domestic plan is not based on underwriting factors but instead on her age. The domestic plans will cost more than visitor plans because of the additional coverage they offer. If you would like to speak with a licensed agent about your options for coverage please feel free to contact our office. For us to provide a quote we would need to have more information such as her citizenship, home country, age, state she will be residing, dates of coverage (or we can provide a monthly amount), and what her status will be when she arrives.
