William Paterson University International Student Health Insurance Requirements

International Students

William Paterson University does not cite specific insurance requirements for F1/J-1 international students. However, the university does state, in accordance with state law, all full-time students are offered health insurance that can be purchased. Full-time students are defined as:

  • Undergraduate - registered for 12 credits
  • Graduate students - registered for 9 credits or more
  • Biology/Biotechnology graduate students - registered for 8 or more credits
  • Doctor of Clinical Psychology students - registered for 6 credits or more. 

These students are automatically charged for the school insurance, and will have to waive out of the plan by providing proof of comparable coverage if desired. 

William Paterson University does not cite any specifications for insurance of international student accompanying dependents. Therefore, F-2 student dependents can select any plan shown in the Student (F1/F2) section. J2 dependents may not have mandates from the school, however, the Department of State does mandate that they are required to obtain and maintain insurance that meets the federal limits for the duration of their stay in the U.S. The plans shown in the Exchange Visitor (J1/J2) section do meet those requirements. It is recommended to contact the Center for International Education office to verify the health insurance requirements prior to purchase, as detailed information may only be provided to the attendee.

Exchange Visitors

William Paterson University states that all Exchange Visitors on a J-1 visa must attest that they have purchased health insurance either once they have arrived in the U.S., or prior to their arrival for both themselves and any dependents that may be accompanying them. It is stated that the plan must meet the minimum limits of coverage issued by the U.S. Department of State. Although the school provides a list of carriers, it is not required to purchase directly through them. All plans under the Exchange Visitor (J-1/J-2) section will meet the requirements mandated by the Department of State. It is recommended to contact the Center for International Education office to verify the health insurance requirements prior to purchase, as detailed information may only be provided to the attendee.
