Western New England University (WNE), located in Springfield, Massachusetts, was established in 1919. It was founded as the Springfield Division of Northeastern College for the purpose of part-time educational opportunities for adult learners in law, accounting, and business. It was granted the right to confer bachelor’s degrees in 1951 and was renamed Western New England College. It moved to its present campus in 1959. In 2011, in recognition of its diverse offerings of master’s and doctoral degrees, it gained its present name. Today, WNE enrolls almost 4,000 students and counting each year. The school colors are blue and gold, and its athletic mascot is the Golden Bear.
WNE offers bachelor’s, master’s, doctoral, and professional degrees across its six academic colleges and schools: the College of Arts and Sciences, the College of Business, the College of Engineering, the College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, the Western New England University School of Law, and the Center for Graduate and Advanced Studies.
Campus attractions include the clocktower cupola at the center of campus, emblazoned with the university logo and the inspiration for the campus yearbook’s name, “The Cupola.” Students also operate a campus literary magazine, a campus TV station, a campus newspaper, and a campus radio station. Another notable feature is “The Rock,” a 10-ton rock taken from a construction site in 1968 and placed on campus. It was painted with the words “Class of 1968.” Since then, the rock has been painted over numerous times to advertise student clubs, events, and activities.
Notable Western New England University alumni include film producer Anthony Katagas, video game music composer and musician Tommy Tallarico, former Chairman of the Democratic National Committee and former NBA Commissioner Larry O’Brien, and Angelo State University President Joseph Rallo.
