Western Carolina University (WCU) is a part of the University of North Carolina System. A public university, the main campus is in Cullowhee with satellite campuses in Asheville and Cherokee.

In response to the need for a community school, WCU put down roots in 1889. WCU started as a semi-public secondary school known as the Cullowhee Academy.

Over the years, the school slowly grew with changes in the local community needs to become WCU in 1967. The university joined the UNC System in 1972.

Situated in Jackson County in the valley of the Tuckasegee River, Cullowhee enjoys a rather pleasant climate.

With a faculty ratio of 17:1, WCU offers more than 130 courses divided across undergraduate degrees and minors.

WCU also has a graduate school and an Honors College offering interdisciplinary programs in various fields.

In 1893, WCU established the first publicly funded normal school in North Carolina for training teachers. Today, WCU is the sixth-largest producer of teachers in North Carolina.

The university is built on the ancient site of a Cherokee village. This is a reason for the integration of the Appalachian and Cherokee culture into its system.
