The city of Tacoma can experience air pollution at times. If you have asthma or another breathing condition, the air quality could cause health issues. Tacoma is considered a generally safe city, but like all largely populated cities, crime can be present. Students should remember to always lock the doors of their vehicle and residence, avoid walking alone at night in poorly lit areas, and keep their valuables secure at all times.

Other risks students may face can come in the form of a new climate, or different food than they’re used to. Tacoma receives significantly more rain than many U.S. cities, which can increase the possibility of illness for those not used to a damp climate. There are also a variety of unhealthy food choices available that should be eaten sparingly to prevent health issues.

The University of Puget Sound International Student Insurance Requirements

International Students

The University of Puget Sound requires all international students purchase an insurance plan. For the reason, all F-1/J-1 international students are automatically enrolled in the insurance plan offered by the school. The school does not provide details pertaining to plan waivers, nor do they cite insurance requirements for accompanying dependents. Those with an F-2 visa can select any plan in the Student (F-1/F-2) section of the website. J-2 visa holders must select a plan that meets all minimum limits required by the Department of State. All plans under the Exchange Visitor (J-1/J-2) section will meet the requirements mandated by the Department of State.

Exchange Visitors

The University of Puget Sound requires that J-1 Scholars, J-1 Faculty, or those participating in a J visa exchange program to purchase health insurance for themselves and their dependents. The school does provide a plan for J-status Short-Term Scholars offered by an approved source; however, it is not mandated to enroll in this plan. Those electing to enroll must obtain an alternative plan for their dependents, as dependents are unable to enroll them in the school plan. J-1 Faculty, if eligible, can elect to enroll in the plan options provide by the Human Resources Department, provided it has a low deductible to keep you within the federal limit mandates issued by the Department of State. In addition, J-1 Faculty must purchase a standalone medical evacuation plan, as this plan does not offer that coverage. The Atlas MedEvac plan would meet the minimum limits of coverage. Therefore, J-1/J-2 visa holders can find the plans offered below, or in the Exchange Visitors (J-1/J-2) section which meet the federal limits required by the Department of State, and the additional requirements stated by the school as follows:

  • The plan may require a waiting period for preexisting conditions as determined by industry standards.
  • May include co-insurance in which exchange visitor may be required to pay up to 25% of the covered benefits per accident or illness.
  • Must not unreasonably exclude coverage for perils inherent to the activities of the exchange program in which the exchange visitors participates.

The school does note that international scholars and dependents may be subject to the requirements of the Affordable Care Act.

It is recommended to contact the International Programs office to verify the health insurance requirements prior to purchase, as detailed information may only be provided to the attendee.
