The University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus (CU Anschutz), located in Aurora, Colorado, was founded in 2006. The University of Colorado’s School of Medicine was established in 1883, and in the 1920s, it moved from the main campus in Boulder to a quadrangle of buildings in Denver that was named the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center. The School of Nursing moved there in 1965, and the School of Dentistry in 1973.
The current site of the Anschutz Medical Campus was founded as a military hospital, General Hospital 21, during World War I. Shortly after, it was renamed the Fitzsimons Army Medical Center and was a major health center during World War II. By the late 1990s, however, the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center had run out of space to expand, and the Fitzsimons Army Medical Center was facing closure. In 2006, the health sciences center moved into medical center and was renamed the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus.
Today, CU Anschutz enrolls more than 4,500 students and counting each year. The school colors are black and gold. It encompasses the CU School of Medicine, the CU Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, the CU College of Nursing, the CU School of Dental Medicine, and the Colorado School of Public Health, and the Graduate School. It offers more than 40 undergraduate and graduate degrees. CU Anschutz is also the site of the University of Colorado Cancer Center, the only cancer center in the state funded by the National Cancer Institute.
CU Anschutz has also been noted as a university with very high research activity. In its current form and as the Fitzsimons Medical Center, the campus has been the site of several important discoveries, including the first use of human cell cloning to study genetics, the development of the first shingles vaccine, and the first-ever liver transplant.
