The University of Central Oklahoma, located in Edmond, Oklahoma, was established in 1890. It was founded as the Territorial Normal School, a teacher training institution that opened its doors to students in 1891. UCO is the oldest public institution of higher education in the state of Oklahoma. In 1919, it became a four-year school, and by 1939, it was authorized to grant Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science degrees. It conferred its first Master of Teaching degree in 1954. In 1971, it was authorized to begin expanding its master’s-degree offerings starting with English and Business Administration.
Today, UCO enrolls more than 16,000 students and counting each year. The school’s colors are blue and bronze, and its athletic nickname is the Bronchos.
One noteworthy campus feature is the UCO Jazz Lab, home to the School of Music’s Jazz Studies Division, which offers music students a performance stage, classrooms, and a recording studio. The site consistently ranks among the best live music venues in Oklahoma City. Similarly, the ACM@UCO program (Academy of Contemporary Music at the University of Central Oklahoma) launched in 2018 and hosts concerts, workshops, clinics, masterclasses, and networking opportunities for more than 6,000 students and aspiring musicians each year.
UCO is also the first university in the nation to offer a bachelor’s degree in funeral services.
Notable University of Central Oklahoma alumni include actors Jim Beaver and Milena Govich; author W.K. Stratton; radio broadcaster Dave Garrett; and AT&T CEO and Chairman Randall L. Stephenson.
