University of Arizona International Student Insurance

General Information

The University of Arizona, located in Tucson, Arizona, was chartered as a land-grant university in 1885 and opened its doors to students in 1891. It was the first university established in the Arizona Territory, which didn’t become a state until 1912. The university offers a broad curriculum of classes including liberal arts, science, agriculture, architecture, business, education, nursing, pharmacy, law, and medicine. The school’s colors are cardinal red and navy blue, and the athletic nickname is the wildcats.

University Discoveries

Researchers from UA have made various important contributions to human knowledge. Planetary astronomer Gerard Kuiper proposed the existence of a belt of small planets or comets orbiting between Neptune and Pluto. This region is now called the Kuiper belt. Similarly, UA has collaborated with NASA on every planetary mission and developed a method for asteroid sampling. Cardiologist Dr. Gordon Ewy developed chest-compression-only cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), effectively doubling CPR survival rates.

On Campus

The university is home to several observatories as well as the Arizona State Museum, the oldest and largest anthropological museum in the area.

Notable Alumni

Notable alumni include film director John Hughes; comedians Garry Shandling and Kristen Wiig; authors Barbara Kingsolver and David Foster Wallace; and Joan Ganz Cooney, creator of the long-running children’s TV show “Sesame Street.”

University of Arizona International Student Insurance Requirements

Exchange Visitors

University of Arizona advises that J-1 Exchange Visitors (EVP, Research Scholar, Professor, Short-Term Scholar, and Specialist) and their dependents are required to have minimum limits of health insurance stated by the U.S. government-required limits of health insurance, as well as to include the university's additional health insurance requirements for the duration of the programs. Some J-1 Exchange Visitors may be eligible for the UA employee benefits.

These additional requirements may include but are not limited to the following: A reasonable waiting period for pre-existing conditions, may include provisions for coinsurance under terms of which the insured may be responsible for 25% of the cost of a covered expense, must not be unreasonable to exclude coverage for perils inherent to the actives of the participated programs, etc.

International Students

F-1 and all other international student visa holders, including J-1 international student visas, are automatically enrolled in the school’s insurance plan. The students are able to waive if the plan meets the health guidelines provided by the University. Please contact our office if you would like more information. Dependents are not required to be on the University plan. May be subject to change based on a health insurance wavier or compliance form.
