The University of Arizona, located in Tucson, Arizona, was chartered as a land-grant university in 1885 and opened its doors to students in 1891. It was the first university established in the Arizona Territory, which didn’t become a state until 1912. The university offers a broad curriculum of classes including liberal arts, science, agriculture, architecture, business, education, nursing, pharmacy, law, and medicine. The school’s colors are cardinal red and navy blue, and the athletic nickname is the wildcats.
Researchers from UA have made various important contributions to human knowledge. Planetary astronomer Gerard Kuiper proposed the existence of a belt of small planets or comets orbiting between Neptune and Pluto. This region is now called the Kuiper belt. Similarly, UA has collaborated with NASA on every planetary mission and developed a method for asteroid sampling. Cardiologist Dr. Gordon Ewy developed chest-compression-only cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), effectively doubling CPR survival rates.
The university is home to several observatories as well as the Arizona State Museum, the oldest and largest anthropological museum in the area.
Notable alumni include film director John Hughes; comedians Garry Shandling and Kristen Wiig; authors Barbara Kingsolver and David Foster Wallace; and Joan Ganz Cooney, creator of the long-running children’s TV show “Sesame Street.”
