Tufts University International Student Health Insurance Requirements

International students who are scheduled to take three or more courses at are automatically enrolled in and billed for the Tufts University Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP). International students can only waive this coverage for a comparable U.S. health insurance plan that is Affordable Care Act-compliant, as required by Massachusetts state law. The university does not cite specific insurance requirements for F-2/J-2 international student dependents. However, as per Massachusetts state law, no plan is available unless a waiver form is provided. It is recommended to contact the Tufts Health Services Office to verify the health insurance requirements prior to purchase, as detailed information may only be provided to the attendee.

Tufts University’s Exchange Visitor program includes those who are international scholars, researchers, professors, and specialists. Those who are on a J visa are stated to be responsible for obtaining and maintaining health insurance for themselves and their J-2 dependents. Tufts University offers different plan options for each of its categories:

Tufts University Employees

J-1 visa employees who may be eligible for Tufts employee insurance unless otherwise cited in the employee contacted. It will be required to schedule an orientation with Human Resources upon arrival. If you are wanting to opt out of the insurance provided, it is stated to confirm the alternative plan meets all the federal regulations issued by the Department of State, and any additional requirements stated by the Human Resource department in your orientation meeting.

Postdoctoral Associate or Fellows

Tufts University cites the J visa holders who are Postdoctoral Associates or Fellows and their dependents are required to contact the Student Advisory & Health Administration for information pertaining to the health package benefits or waiver options.

Exchange Visitors

All others Exchange Visitors must meet the federal regulations issued by the Department of State. All plans under the Exchange Visitor (J-1/J-2) section will meet the requirements mandated by the Department of State.
