Temple University, located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, was established in 1884. It was founded by minister Russell Conwell as a night school to accommodate working people who wanted to further their education. The school received a college charter in 1888, was authorized to grant degrees in 1891, and became a university in 1907. Today, Temple University enrolls more than 40,000 students annually and offers professional degrees in law, medicine, podiatry, pharmacy, dentistry, and more. The school’s colors are cherry and white, and its athletic nickname — tying back to its night-school beginnings — is the owl.
The school is the site of the Institute for Survey Research, one of the few university-based academic survey research centers in the country. Its Foot and Ankle Institute, part of the School of Podiatric Medicine, is the largest podiatric medical treatment facility in the world with more than 40,000 patient visits per year. Temple University has nine campuses, including four in Philadelphia, one in Rome, and one in Tokyo. One of the Philadelphia campuses, Temple University Ambler, originated as an independent junior college but merged with Temple in 1958.
Temple also boasts the largest university police force in the United States.
Notable Temple University alumni include comedians Bill Cosby and Bob Saget; filmmaker Adam McKay; NBC News President Steve Capus; actors Kunal Nayyar and Tom Sizemore; serial killer Ted Bundy; and authors Ben Bova and Jerry Spinelli.
