Southern States University (SSU) is a private, for-profit university based in San Diego, California, and established in 1983. It’s a specialized school offering just six degrees: bachelor of business administration, master of business administration, master of science in information technology, undergraduate certificate in marketing, graduate certificate in business administration, and a graduate certificate in information technology. It operates three campuses in Irvine, California; San Diego, California; and Las Vegas, Nevada. The university is owned by Tepper Technologies, Inc., which purchased it in 2005.
Students who complete one of the nine-month certificate programs are eligible to apply for one year of Optional Practical Training (OPT). Likewise, students who complete the master of science in information technology program qualify for a STEM extension of OPT and can apply for a two-year extension of OPT after their first year.
SSU has been accredited by the Accrediting Council for Independent Colleges and Schools. In December 2017, it achieved eligibility status for regional accreditation from the Western Senior College and University Commission. It has also maintained “Institutional Approval” status from the California Bureau of Private Postsecondary Education. Similarly, the U.S. Department of Education has approved federally funded financial aid for SSU students.
