Cover Your Risks with International Student Health Insurance for Southern Illinois University

You have to make many important decisions about your finances and well-being before you move to the U.S. as an international student. Choosing the right health insurance plan is a crucial step in this process.

Here is all the information you need about understanding the health insurance requirements at SIU Carbondale:

International Student Health Insurance for Southern Illinois University - FAQs

Do international students need health insurance before joining Southern Illinois University?

Yes, all international students (holders of F-1/F-2 or J-1/J-2 visas) must purchase adequate health insurance before enrolling in classes at the university. Your insurance plan will be vetted by university officials before course registration.

What’s the need for Southern Illinois University health insurance for international students?

Unlike some countries, the U.S. does not have a single national public health insurance program. That is why you will have to choose from a range of options that best meet your specific needs.

Having adequate insurance is crucial in times of emergency, because healthcare in the United States is notoriously expensive. If you do not have health insurance and require medical treatment, you could find yourself stuck with a medical bill you cannot afford.

A smart health insurance plan can provide essential financial protection from these bills. It is for this reason that the university requires you to have insurance coverage in place.

How to find the best student health insurance for Southern Illinois University?

SIU Carbondale will automatically enroll you in its in-house Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP), unless you elect to waive this coverage for a comparable external insurance plan.

Choosing your own insurance policy gives you the flexibility to include and exclude benefits and tailor the coverage to your needs. Use this website to read and compare scores of international student health insurance plans for SIU Carbondale and find the best-suited one for you. However, be sure to read the Insurance Requirements section directly below, and only choose a plan that meets all the requirements of the university and your visa status.

Southern Illinois University International Student Insurance Requirements

International Students

Southern Illinois University requires all international F-1 and J-1 students taking on–campus courses to obtain health insurance. Students are automatically enrolled in the SIU health insurance plan, and are able to enroll their dependents at an additional cost as long as they do so within the same period of student enrollment of benefits. Those students who would like to waive the plan can do so for a plan that is comparable to the SIU health insurance plan. It is recommended to contact Student Health Services to verify the health insurance requirements prior to purchase, as detailed information may only be provided to the attendee.

Exchange Visitors

Southern Illinois University J-1 Scholars, Researchers, and Professors are required obtain and maintain health insurance for the full duration of their stay, as per the federal mandates issued by the U.S. Department of State, for themselves and their any accompanying dependents. It is also noted that the plan must also meet additional requirements such as:

  • May require a waiting period for preexisting conditions which is reasonable as determined by current industry standards
  • May include a provision for coinsurance under the terms of which the exchange visitor may be required to pay up to 25% of the covered benefits per accident or illness
  • Shall not unreasonably exclude coverage for perils inherent to the activities of the exchange program in which the exchange visitor participates

In addition, those who are paid faculty holding a J visa and are eligible for the SIU’s employee health plan must purchase a supplemental plan for medical evacuation and repatriation coverage, as their employee coverage does not include this. Atlas MedEvac will meet the federal limits of coverage. It is recommended to contact the Center for International Education to verify the health insurance requirements prior to purchase, as detailed information may only be provided to the attendee.
