General Information

The Oklahoma State University Center for Health Sciences (OSU-CHS), located in Tulsa, Oklahoma, is a medical school that is part of the Oklahoma State University System. It was founded in 1972 as the Oklahoma College of Osteopathic Medicine and Surgery. In 1988, the college merged into the OSU System and became the OSU College of Osteopathic Medicine. By 1997, it had expanded its focus to become an academic health center and gained its current name. The school’s mission is to train osteopathic physicians, research scientists, and health care professionals with an emphasis on serving rural and underserved areas in the state of Oklahoma. It enrolls more than 1,000 students and counting each year. The school colors are orange and black.

Academic and Research Opportunities

OSU-CHS offers graduate and professional degrees across its five academic divisions: the College of Osteopathic Medicine, the School of Allied Health, the School of Biomedical Sciences, the School of Forensic Sciences, and the School of Health Care Administration.

The OSU Center for Health Sciences also operates a clinic system in Tulsa. Facilities include the OSU Medical Center, the OSU Medicine Clinics, the OSU Health Access Network, and Project ECHO (Extension for Community Health Care Outcomes). Other partnerships include the Center for Rural Health, high school outreach programs, and the Office of American Indians in Medicine and Science.

One notable research initiative is the Center for Indigenous Health Research and Policy.

Oklahoma State University Center for Health Sciences International Student Insurance Requirements

International Students

All F-1 and J-1 international students, as well as their F-2 and J-2 dependents, are required to have adequate health insurance coverage for the full duration of their program. Insurance will be assigned upon arrival on campus. All international students are automatically enrolled in the school’s insurance plan, and the university does not mention the option to waive enrollment. You can contact the OSU International Student Admissions office for more information.

Exchange Visitors

J-1 Exchange Visitors and J-2 dependents are mandated to have medical insurance for the full duration of the program. This coverage must meet the minimum standard requirements set by the U.S. Department of State. Any plan meeting school requirements is acceptable. They must provide proof of adequate coverage within 10 days of arriving on campus.

J-1 Scholars

J-1 Scholars are eligible to purchase the OSU Student Insurance Plan. Per school requirements, women who are or may become pregnant during their time in the country must purchase a plan with maternity coverage for both pre- and post-natal care. Women who are currently pregnant are recommended to purchase through the university, as they are not eligible for any of the plans offered below. Women who are not currently pregnant but may become so are advised to purchase a plan with maternity coverage that meets the university requirements.

Please contact our office or send a waiver form to discuss these options, or if you would like more information in general. This information may be subject to change based on an insurance waiver or a compliance form.
