Nova Southeastern University, whose primary campus is located in Davie, Florida, was established in 1964. It was founded as the Nova University of Advanced Technology, a graduate school for physical and social sciences. Nova expanded its curriculum to include courses in law, education, business, psychology, and more. It became nationally recognized for its distance education program. Meanwhile. The Southeastern University of Health Sciences was founded in 1981 as a college of osteopathic medicine, but it also expanded to add programs in pharmacy, optometry, medical sciences, dental medicine, and more. In 1994, Nova University and Southeastern University of Health Sciences merged to form Nova Southeastern University. 

Today, Nova enrolls more than 20,000 students and counting each year. The school colors are blue and gray, and its athletic nickname is the sharks.

Academic and Research Opportunities

Nova offers more than 50 bachelor’s degrees, about 50 master’s degrees, more than 30 doctoral degrees, and two specialist programs across its 18 schools and colleges. The school’s broad range of educational offerings include pharmacy, dental medicine, optometry, law, psychology, business, natural sciences, and oceanography.

Nova has been classified as a Carnegie research university. Significant areas of research include chronic fatigue syndrome, breast cancer, problem drinking, marine biotechnology, stem cells, shark DNA forensics and fin trade, coral reef biodiversity and ecosystems, cybersecurity and bioinformatics, and prescription drug abuse.

On Campus

Campus is home to a number of interesting attractions. The Alvin Sherman Library, Research, and Information Technology Center is the largest library in the state of Florida. The NSU Art Museum, founded in 1958, contains more than 6,000 works, including the country’s largest collection of paintings and drawings by American realist painter William Glackens. The university also hosts a number of lecture series like the Distinguished Speakers Series, the Life 101 series, and the Power Lunch series.

Notable alumni of Nova Southeastern University include Isabel Saint Nalo, Vice President of Panama; reality TV star Dr. Will Kirby; and MLB All-Star player J.D. Martinez.
