General Information

Located in a rural, Inuit-dominated region, this campus came into being after an act of the state legislature in 1976. It was formerly known as Northwest Community College, and in 1987, it became a branch of the University of Alaska Fairbanks and changed its name to the UAF Northwest Campus.

This campus prioritizes the development of a cross-regional network through its faculty.

It might interest you to know that Nome attracted foreign residents through the discovery of gold in the Anvil Creek in the late 1800s.

The university serves Nome and an additional 15 Alaskan native villages that cover an area close to the size of Indiana.

Northwest Campus and the villages it serves are completely cut off from roads. Both are reachable only by air travel.

Northwest Campus, Nome Academic and Research Opportunities

The Northwest Campus is a part of the College of Rural and Community Development and a community campus of UA Fairbanks. It collaborates with the population of the Bering Strait region, providing relevant programs and training opportunities to students.

Northwest Campus offers academic degree programs, specialized programs, and training.

Courses are offered through lectures via print, online correspondence, class meetings, and audio conferences. This gets extended to the local students of the Inuit community as well as the surrounding rural community at large.

As an international student, you have the chance to partake in any local course or any courses offered by the other campuses.

Health Risks for Northwest Campus, Nome International Students

Nome might be remote, but there’s enough to do here. Come summer, you can indulge in fishing, air tours, picnics on the beach, and take ground tours around the island.

If you head to the water, there's a remote risk of drowning. You also put yourself at risk of sustaining physical injuries.

Winter offers you plenty of opportunities to go sledding, skiing, snowboarding, and even sled dog racing. All of these activities provide thrilling experiences but can cause serious injuries.

Winter also brings with it the oppressing Alaskan cold that dips well below freezing. Beware of frostbite and hypothermia while indulging in any outdoor activities.

Cover Your Risks with Health Insurance for Northwest Campus, Nome

Living abroad can be daunting. It's wise to have health insurance in advance before travelling. The university will ask you to submit proof of your health insurance before enrollment.

The cost of medical treatment in the U.S., as well as harsh weather conditions in Alaska, should be a good reason to have health insurance in place.

Your insurance can cover the cost of your medical bills, though this does not imply that you are not susceptible to any injuries or diseases.
