About Northern Illinois University

The main campus of Northern Illinois University, located in DeKalb, Illinois, was established in 1895. It opened its doors to students in 1899 as the Northern Illinois State Normal School, a training institution for teachers. It became a four-year school in 1921 and began offering graduate classes in 1951. It gained university status and its present name in 1957. Today, it enrolls more than 16,000 students and counting each year. The school colors are cardinal and black, and its athletic nickname is the huskies.

Northern Illinois University International Student Insurance

Northern Illinois University requires that all J-Visa students meet school health insurance requirements. J-1 Scholars are required to provide the university with proof of insurance that meets the minimum levels of health insurance coverage. J-1s are responsible for providing proof of insurance for themselves and their J-2 dependents, excluding Fulbright Scholars. Fulbright Scholars are required to purchase the school's insurance plan and are not able to waive. J-2 dependents are not eligible to enroll in the school's plan.

At Northern Illinois University, F-Visa students insurance may or may not be provided and mandated by the school, based on their classification. F-2 dependents are not eligible for the school plan. F-1 students may waive the school's plan if they purchase one that offers comparable coverage. Unless they are sponsored by their home country's government, students taking 9 or more on-campus hours are required to have NIU's insurance plan. Students taking fewer than 9 credit hours are not mandated but are strongly recommended to be covered under an insurance plan.

All other international students are able to waive the school's plan for one of the approved plans found on the school’s webpage.

This information may be subject to change based on a health insurance waiver or compliance form. Please contact our office if you would like more information about Northern Illinois University international student insurance.
