Its curriculum focuses mainly on government, politics, public administration, and journalism, although other NYU academic departments that offer classes include environmental studies, history, international relations, English, art history, NYU Law, and social work.

New York University Washington D.C. International Student Insurance Requirements

Exchange Visitors

Federal regulations require all J-1 exchange visitors and J-2 dependents to have health insurance that meets specified minimum requirements. For exchange visitors on a J visa, the requirements are medical benefits of at least $100,000 per illness or accident, repatriation of remains coverage of $25,000, medical evacuation of $50,000, and a deductible no more than $500 per incident.

NYU's employee health insurance plans (except the high-deductible health plan) meet all federal requirements except for repatriation and medical evacuation coverage. All J-1 exchange visitors and accompanying J-2 dependents on the NYU employee health insurance plan must purchase a supplemental policy with these benefits to bring their coverage up to standard.

J-1 exchange visitors and their J-2 dependents not on the NYU health insurance plan have two options. They may purchase health insurance through ISP, or they can waive the requirement to purchase a plan through ISP because they have alternate coverage that meets the J-1 standards. In the latter case, an agent from the health insurance provider must certify that the plan meets the minimum coverage requirements and sign a certification form.

International Students

NYU prefers that F-1 visa holders enroll in the school's insurance plan, but they may waive this plan if they purchase another that offers comparable coverage. F-2 and J-2 students must meet the standard requirements.

This information may be subject to change based on a health insurance waiver or compliance form. Please contact our office if you would like more information.
