New Mexico Tech International Student Insurance

The New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology (better known as New Mexico Tech), located in Socorro, New Mexico, was established in 1889. It was founded as the New Mexico School of Mines by an act of the New Mexico Territorial Legislature and opened its doors to students in 1893. Its curriculum focused on mining, metallurgy, chemistry, and related fields. Petroleum engineering became another key field of study during the 1930s. The university adopted its present name in 1951 and produced its first Ph.D. graduate in 1956. During the following decades, its STEM-related course offerings continued to expand, from computer science to astrophysics to different branches of engineering.

Today, New Mexico Tech enrolls more than 2,000 students and counting each year. The school colors are gold and silver, and its mascot is the Miner.

Academic and Research Opportunities

New Mexico Tech offers associate’s, bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees in STEM fields (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics). It has also recently rebranded itself as a “STE^2M” school, with an added emphasis on entrepreneurship.

Research is an important component of education at the school. The university encourages researchers and faculty members to include undergraduate and graduate students both in their initiatives. Undergraduate engineering seniors are required to complete a capstone research project, working with off-campus sponsors and partners that include companies like General Electric, Yates Petroleum, NASA, and more. Some of the school’s research facilities include the Langmuir Laboratory for Atmospheric Research, the Magdalena Ridge Observatory, the Climate & Water Consortium, and the National Cave and Karst Research Institute.

Campus life

On the cultural side, New Mexico Tech does host an annual Performing Arts Series open to the Socorro community at large. The school’s location lends itself to a variety of outdoor recreational activities like rock climbing, mountain biking, camping, and a nearby 18-hole golf course.

Notable Alumni

Notable New Mexico Tech alumni include Conrad Hilton, founder of the Hilton Hotels chain; Terry Wallace, director of the Los Alamos National Laboratory; and Lukas Lundin, a billionaire businessman.
