New Jersey City University (NJCU) started its journey as a teachers’ training school in 1927 with the name New Jersey State Normal School. After eight years, it became the New Jersey State Teachers College and later received university status in 1998.
Today, the institution is among the most comprehensive educational institutions in the entire state of New Jersey. It seeks to improve the socio-economic and intellectual environments of the surrounding areas, the country, and ultimately the world through its educated and empowered students.
The goal of NJCU is to provide education that is rooted in practical applicability. Through a rigorous and innovative learning methodology, the programs expose the students to the various real-time scenarios related to their courses.
The location of the university, minutes away from New York City, acts as a big plus point. Students can gain access to an array of organizations across a multitude of industries to get insights into the ways and means of how they work. It also facilitates their career prospects after the completion of their programs.
NJCU offers 47 undergraduate degree programs and more than 30 graduate programs across various disciplines in liberal arts, education, business, and professional degrees, including the new-age fields. The four colleges providing the programs are:

The university also offers doctoral programs in Civil Security—Leadership, Management and Policy and Professional Security Studies.
Lots of historical landmarks await you at Jersey City. It’s a stone’s throw from the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island. The Colgate Clock, H & M Powerhouse, and Court House will all take you back in time. You will also love the walks on the waterfront.
By and large, Jersey City is a safe place to be. Though the violent crime rate is somewhat higher than in the rest of the state, the criminal activities are mostly confined to certain neighborhoods. Areas for you to avoid include Greenville, Bergen-Lafayette, and McGinley Square, among others.
Be careful about black bears, venomous snakes, and coyotes if you decide to go camping in the area. Wildfires are also a risk.
Health insurance for students studying abroad is mandatory. In a country like the U.S., medical treatment can be frightfully expensive. Having insurance can at least take care of much of the expenses, if not all.
Without health insurance, you won’t get admission to NJCU, as it is a mandate from both the university and the U.S. Department of State.
The university’s rules mention that it is compulsory for every F-1/F-2 and J-1/J-2 visa holder to have health insurance before they can join the university.
You can’t predict when you might be struck by a physical ailment. But once you are, you would need treatment, and treatment expenses are high in the U.S. So, get the insurance coverage you need and protect yourself from this additional financial burden.
There is a wide variety of plans for you to choose from. Read over them carefully to take advantage of the best medical insurance for international students in the U.S.
