Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis International Student Insurance Requirements

International Students

Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) requires all international students, both with F and J visas, to have health insurance for themselves as well as their dependents. Each student is automatically enrolled in the school health insurance plan with no option to waive unless qualify for an exemption. Dependents are able to be added at an additional cost

Automatic exemption criteria include:

  • Graduate students with Assistantships or Fellowships who are enrolled in a different IU health insurance plan
  • Students who have been sponsored by one of the following governmental organization listed below who have provided a valid financial guarantee on file with the Office of International Affairs:

  1. Abu Dhabi Police Scholarship Program
  2. Kuwait Embassy
  3. Oman Embassy
  4. Qatar Embassy
  5. Qatar Higher Education Institute
  6. Royal Thai Scholarship Program
  7. SABIC
  8. SACM
  9. UAE Embassy
  10. UAE Military Attache

Exemption requests

  • Students who will remain outside the United States for either the Fall or Spring semester and enroll in their IUPUI courses online
  • Students with a qualifying IUPUI assistantship or fellowship
  • Students eligible for insurance coverage through a parent's or spouse's U.S.-based employer
  • Students working in the U.S. on CPT or OPT who are eligible for insurance coverage through their employer
  • J-1 exchange students with alternative coverage that meets J-1 requirements.

J-1 students who are able to waive for this reason can choose to purchase a plan that meets the federal limits set forth by the U.S. department of State, as well as the additional requirement which includes coverage for maternity/pregnancy care. These plans can be located below or under the Exchange Visitor (J-1/J-2) section of the website.

It is recommended to contact the Office of International Service to verify the health insurance requirements prior to purchase, as detailed information may only be provided to the attendee.

Exchange Visitors

Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) requires that all Visiting Scholars have health insurance for themselves as well as their dependents. It is noted that Visiting Scholars who are either employed or just short–term are required to maintain health coverage. For this reason, IUPUI provides a health plan for Visiting Scholars as well as their dependents, and for those who receive employee-paid benefits

Visiting Scholars and All Other Non-Employees

IUPUI states that Visiting Scholars who are not eligible for employee benefits are required to be enrolled in the IU International Plan unless they chose to waive the plan for one that meet the waiver requirements. J-1 Visitors and their dependents are able to waive for a plan that meets the federal limits set forth by the U.S. department of State, as well as the additional requirement which includes coverage for maternity/pregnancy care. These plans can be located below or under the Exchange Visitor (J-1/J-2) section of the website.

IU J visa Employees

IUPUI states that J-1 visa holders who are considered to be full-time employees by working a minimum of 75% are eligible for IU medical benefits. This plan is available to dependents as well at an additional cost, and can be enrolled in at the time they arrive in the U.S. within 30 days. IU notes that this plan meets the minimum level of coverage issued by the U.S Department of State. It is stated that the employee must also purchase a supplemental plan to meet the requirements for emergency medical evacuation and repatriation coverage. The Atlas MedEvac plan would be a good supplemental plan that meets this requirement.
