Hamline University, located in Saint Paul, Minnesota, was founded in 1854. It’s the oldest institution of higher learning in Minnesota, which didn’t become a state until 1858. The school was named after Leonidas Lent Hamline, who donated the funds to start the school. Upon opening, it accepted both men and women, a rarity for the time period. Hamline’s colors are burgundy and gray, and the school mascot is the Piper.
The school operated in Red Wing, Minnesota, until 1869, when the university shut down due to low enrollment after the Civil War. After some construction delays, it reopened in Saint Paul in 1880. The brand-new University Hall burned down after just two and a half years. It was rebuilt and reopened as Old Main in 1884 and has remained a fixture of the campus ever since.
Hamline is made up of four schools: the College of Liberal Arts, the School of Education, the Creative Writing Program, and the Hamline University School of Business. The Creative Writing program offers a BFA, an MFA, and a low-residency MFA in literature for children and young adults. There’s also a satellite campus in Minneapolis that offers five graduate degrees and counting.
Notable alumni include former and current members of national and state governments; NFL and NBA athletes; actors William Fawcett and Coleen Gray; Academy-award-winning audio engineer John Kenneth Hilliard; and religious leader Lester Mondale.
