The university started as the Big Rapids Industrial School and joined Michigan's Higher Education System in 1950. It gained its current name only in 1987.

Since 1990, the university has undergone major changes to replace buildings ravaged by fire in 1950. Today, the university boasts state-of-the-art facilities and a modern campus. Most facilities are within walking distance of the campus.

Ferris State University International Student Insurance Requirements

International Students

Ferris State University mandates all F-1 and J-1 international students to obtain health insurance during their stay. For this reason, each student is automatically enrolled into the school’s approved insurance plan. Those who choose to waive the plan can do so by completing the wavier form and showing proof of comparable insurance coverage. The waiver form must be completed every semester. Some of the requirement are listed below and read as follows: 

  • Must meet U.S. Department of State regulations
  • A waiting period for pre-existing conditions lasting no longer than one calendar year 
  • Must pay at least 80% of covered benefits 
  • The policy must meet state coverage for each specific term

Ferris State University does not cite any specification for their accompanying dependents. Therefore, F-2 student dependents can select any plan shown in the Student (F-1/F-2) section. J2 dependents may not have mandates from the school; however, the Department of State does state they are required to obtain and maintain the federal limits for the duration of their stay in the U.S. The plans shown in the Exchange Visitor (J-1/J-2) section do meet the requirements. 

It is recommended to contact the Office of International Education to verify the health insurance requirements prior to purchase, as detailed information may only be provided to the attendee.

Exchange Visitors 

Ferris State University does not provide information regarding the J visa Exchange Visitor Program (EVP), or for J-1 Exchange Scholars. However, U.S. Department of State regulations mandates all J visa holders to obtain health insurance that meets the federal standards for the full duration of their time in the U.S. All plans under the Exchange Visitor (J-1/J-2) section will meet the requirements mandated by the Department of State. 

It is recommended to contact the Office of International Education to verify the health insurance requirements prior to purchase, as detailed information may only be provided to the attendee.
