Clark University International Student Insurance

General Information

Clark University, located in Worcester, Massachusetts, was established in 1887. It was founded as an all-graduate institution, but it opened its doors to undergraduates in 1902. As a private research university, it’s known for its contributions to knowledge in the fields of psychology, geography, and physics. The school’s colors are scarlet and white, and its athletic nickname is the cougars.

Campus History

In 1909, to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the school’s opening, the university president invited several leading thinkers of the time to speak. These speakers included Sigmund Freud (his only lectures outside Europe) and Carl Jung, who delivered his famous “Clark Lectures” that introduced the concept of psychoanalysis to the United States. Clark Ph.D. student Paul Siple developed the theory of wind chill factor, and the university is also the birthplace of the birth control pill. Notable musicians who performed at Clark include Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, the Grateful Dead, and Bruce Springsteen.

On Campus

Clark offers an accelerated B.A./Master’s program sometimes called the “Fifth-Year Free” program. Undergraduates who meet certain eligibility requirements can begin a two-year graduate program during their senior year and receive full or partial tuition assistance during their fifth year, effectively earning a bachelor’s and a master’s degree for the price of a bachelor’s.

Notable Alumni

Notable Clark University alumni include Jeffrey Lurie, owner of the Philadelphia Eagles; Ronald Shaich, CEO of Panera Bread; author and model Padma Lakshmi; and Janice Culpepper, senior program officer for the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

Clark University International Student Insurance Requirements

Exchange Visitors

Clark University states J-1 Exchange Visitors and their accompanying dependents are required to obtain and maintain health insurance that meets the federal regulations of the U.S Department of State. It’s also required that the plan meet additional requirements such as: May require a waiting period for any pre-existing condition which is reasonable as determined by current industry standards; May include a provision for co-insurance under the terms that it doesn’t exceed 25% co-insurance for covered benefits per accident or illness; Must not unreasonably exclude benefits for perils inherent to the activities of the exchange visitor’s program. It’s recommended to contact the International Students and Scholars Office (ISSO) to confirm the health insurance requirements prior to purchase.

International Students

Massachusetts state law does state that health and accident insurance are required. For this reason, students are automatically billed for the Clark University school health insurance. The school does mention students are able to waive as long as the waiver for is submitted prior to the date the tuition is billed. The plan must be comparable to the school plan in order to waive, and having a plan from the student's home country is not acceptable.

Accompanying Dependents

There is no mention of health insurance requirements for the international student dependents carrying an F-2 or J-2 visa. Dependents can find available plans under each given section below. The Exchange visitor section does meet all the federal limits of coverage as required by the U.S. Department of State.
