General Information

The University of Alaska established a rural education center in Kotzebue in 1971, and it became the Chukchi Community College in 1978. In 1987, it was rechristened as the Chukchi Campus, University of Alaska Fairbanks.

Located amidst the glorious tundra wilderness, the campus serves an area of almost 36,000 square miles (over 93,200 square kilometers). The population here is close to 9,000, of which more than 80% are Alaskan natives. The college’s aim is the development of the region by ensuring the knowledge growth of the local populace. It was determined that a suitable way to do this is to combine the natives’ age-old lifestyle traditions with technology-enabled formal education and training.

The University of Alaska has established a Chukchi Advisory Council to involve prominent local citizens in the growth of formal education in the locality. This council advises the Campus Director regarding the educational needs of the area and the feasible programs to satisfy those needs.

Chukchi Campus, Kotzebue, Alaska Insurance Requirements

J-1 Exchange Visitors (short-term scholars, research scholars, professors, and specialists), as well as their J-2 dependents, are required to have health insurance that meets the U.S. Department of State’s standard limits. The plan must also include coverage for pre-existing conditions either at the start of the policy or after a reasonable waiting period; a co-pay not to exceed 25%; and must not exclude benefits for perils inherent to the activities of the program.

The minimum requirement for medical treatment is $100,000 per accident or illness. The university, however, recommends a policy amount of $500,000, given the remoteness of the area and potential distance from state-of-the-art medical facilities.

F-1 and J-1 international students are automatically enrolled in the school’s health insurance plan. They may attempt to waive this coverage by submitting documentation to the UAF International Programs office proving that they have a different plan with comparable coverage.
