Chapman University, located in Orange, California, opened as Hesperian College in 1861 on the same day as President Abraham Lincoln’s inauguration. That timing was a deliberate show of support on the part of the new university of a free nation on the brink of Civil War. The university was open to students of any sex or race. Hesperian College was absorbed by California Christian College in 1920, and in 1934, it was renamed Chapman University after C.C. Chapman, the chairman of its board of trustees.
The school’s colors are cardinal and gray, and its athletic nickname is the panthers.
Institutions of interest at Chapman University include the Argyros School of Business and Economics, which has received recognition from Princeton Review and Bloomberg university rankings; the Dodge College of Film and Media Arts, home to a full-size production studio called Marion Knott Studios; and the Barry and Phyllis Rodgers Center for Holocaust Education, whose library was dedicated by Buchenwald concentration camp survivor and famed author Elie Wiesel.
Notable Chapman alumni include Matt & Ross Duffer, co-creators of the television series Stranger Things; actors Colin Hanks and Jodie Sweetin; comedian Leslie Jones; Cooper Hefner, chief creative officer of Playboy Enterprises, Inc.; and Joanna Rosholm, press secretary to former First Lady Michelle Obama.
