Cameron University was established in Lawton, Oklahoma, in 1908, the year after Oklahoma became a state. It began as the Cameron State School of Agriculture, one of six agricultural high schools created by the Oklahoma State Legislature. Its namesake was Rev. E. D. Cameron, a Baptist minister and the first State Superintendent of Schools in Oklahoma.
In 1927, Cameron added junior college courses and changed its name to Cameron State Agricultural College. By 1941, Cameron had phased out its high school classes and became exclusively a junior college. It began offering bachelor’s degrees in 1966 and changed names again, to Cameron College in 1971 and finally to Cameron University in 1974. In 1988, the school was authorized to offer master’s degrees. Cameron University currently offers more than 50 degrees through two-year, four-year, and post-graduate programs.
The school colors are gold and black, and its athletic nickname is the Aggies.
One noteworthy campus feature is the Bill W. Burgess Jr. Business Research Center, whose mission is to help foster economic growth in Southwest Oklahoma and provide information and research results to local businesses. They participate in lectures, forums, and contribute to publications like the Southwest Business and Economics Journal.
Another distinguishing program is the “Cameron University Guarantee.” The school offers to provide additional, free education to any CU graduate who begins work and whose employers discover “a deficiency in core employment areas in the graduate’s major field of study.” This guarantee is the first of its kind in Oklahoma and one of the first in the U.S.
Notable Cameron University alumni include NFL players John Brandes, Ray Gene Smith, and Charles Washington; NBA players Billy Paultz and Avery Johnson; and the first African-American Speaker of the Oklahoma House of Representatives, T.W. Shannon.
