Calumet College Of St. Joseph International Student Insurance

Calumet College of St. Joseph, located in Whiting, Indiana, was established in 1951. A small, Roman Catholic college, it was founded by the Missionaries of the Precious Blood as an extension of Saint Joseph’s College in Indiana. It opened as the Calumet Center using borrowed classrooms from other local colleges. In 1960, it expanded into a full four-year, degree-granting university and moved into its own campus, a former furniture store in East Chicago. It gained its current name in 1971, and in 1973, it officially separated from St. Joseph’s College. In 1976, it moved into the six-story “vertical campus” building donated by Amoco that it inhabits to this day.

The school enrolls less than 1,000 students each year. Its athletic nickname is the Crimson Wave.

Calumet also operates classrooms at three locations in Chicago and two in Indiana.

Campus Offerings

The school offers associate’s, bachelor’s, and master’s degrees, as well as a number of certificate programs. Its most popular undergraduate majors include criminal justice, biomedical and forensic biotechnology, business administration, education, and psychology. A more recent addition to the curriculum is the biokinetics program.

Calumet’s academic programs incorporate a strong focus on social justice and ethics, in keeping with its Catholic roots.

Notable Alumni

Notable Calumet College of St. Joseph alumni include Carmen Lomellin, former U.S. Ambassador to the Organization of American States; NPR journalist Michael Puente; Indiana State Senator Eddie D. Melton; and former Indiana State Representative Dan C. Stevenson.
