International Student Medical Insurance

Brigham Young University - Hawaii International Student Insurance

Brigham Young University–Hawaii, located in Laie, Hawaii, was established in 1955. The school is owned and operated by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. It was founded as the Church College of Hawaii to serve the area’s growing LDS population. The first classes were held in old World War II buildings as LDS labor missionaries began construction on a permanent campus. The first permanent buildings opened in 1958. In 1961, the school gained accreditation as a four-year college. In 1974, the LDS Church Board of Education elevated the school to the rank of university and gave it its current name.

Today, BYU–Hawaii enrolls more than 3,000 students and counting each year. The school’s colors are crimson and gold, and its athletic mascot is the Seasiders.

The school focuses exclusively on undergraduate education. About 97% of the student body are members of the LDS Church, and they follow an honor code—regulating matters like academic honesty; dress and grooming standards; and abstinence from drugs, alcohol, and extramarital sex—in line with LDS teachings.

On Campus

BYU–Hawaii partners with the local Polynesian Cultural Center, a Polynesian-themed theme park and living museum featuring simulated tropical villages and performances of cultural songs and dances. The center is the largest living museum in the state of Hawaii. Students make up about 70% of its employees.

Notable Alumni

Notable BYU–Hawaii alumni include Medal of Honor recipient George E. Wahlen; Congressional delegate Eni Fa'aua'a Hunkin Faleomavaega, Jr.; and university volleyball coach Mike Wilton.
