It originally offered only upper-level undergraduate courses and operated semi-independently of the main campus in Tempe. Freshmen were granted admittance starting in 2001. Today, the ASU West Campus enrolls almost 4,500 students and counting each year.
ASU West offers more than 50 undergraduate and graduate degree programs in its colleges of business, global management, health solutions, interdisciplinary arts and sciences, nursing and health innovation, public service and community solutions, and the teachers college. Of these, the colleges of interdisciplinary arts and sciences and the teachers college are headquartered on campus. Campus is also home to the Gary K. Herberger Young Scholars Academy, a private school for gifted children ages 11–18 years old.
Other noteworthy attractions on campus include front gates designed by Modernist sculptor Albert Paley; public art dotted around campus; the central common area of Fletcher Lawn; and a state-of-the-art fitness complex and swimming pool.
The main campus of Arizona State University, located in Tempe, Arizona, was established in 1885. It was established as the Territorial Normal School and opened its doors to students in 1886.
